Abstract: A polarization splitting grating coupler (PSGC) connects an optical signal from an optical element, such as a fiber, to an optoelectronic integrated circuit. The PSGC separates a received optical signal into two orthogonal polarizations and directs the two polarizations to separate waveguides on an integrated circuit. Each of the two separated polarizations can then be processed, as needed for a particular application, by the integrated circuit. A PSGC can also operate in the reverse direction, and couple two optical signals from an integrated circuit to two respective orthogonal polarizations of one optical output signal sent off chip to an optical fiber.

Abstract: A bidirectional optical transmission apparatus includes a first optical waveguide device, a second optical waveguide device, and a polarization-maintaining optical fiber that connects the first optical waveguide device and the second optical waveguide device. A direction of a slow axis of the polarization-maintaining optical fiber with respect to a first substrate at a connecting portion between the first optical waveguide device and the polarization-maintaining optical fiber and a direction of the slow axis of the polarization-maintaining optical fiber with respect to the second substrate at a connecting portion between the second optical waveguide device and the polarization-maintaining optical fiber are substantially orthogonal to each other.

Abstract: A fiber-optic polarizer comprising the combination of an optical fiber having a core and cladding with different refractive indices and forming a single-mode guiding region, the core having a non-circular cross-section defining two transverse orthogonal axes which, in combination with the different refractive indices, permit the de-coupling of waves polarized along the axes, the guiding region being located sufficiently close to the surface of the fiber, along a selected length of the fiber, to allow coupling to a contiguous medium, and the outer surface of the fiber having a non-circular cross-section with a predetermined geometric relationship to the guiding region and the orthogonal transverse axes so that the location of the guiding region and the orientation of the axes can be ascertained from the geometry of the outer surface. A polymeric film extends longitudinally along a selected length of the fiber and is coupled to the fiber surface that is closest to the core, the film having different indices of refraction along axes aligned with the transverse orthogonal axes of the core, one of the indices of refraction of the film being less than the effective index of refraction of a desired wave in the guiding region of the fiber, and the other index of refraction of the film being greater than the effective index of refraction of an unwanted wave in the guiding region of the fiber.

Abstract: The invention discloses a wave guide structure utilizing a narrow band reflection polarizer comprising a substrate and a multiple layer dielectric for a generally incident unpolarized electromagnetic wave of wavelength .lambda..sub.1 in the ultraviolet, visible, and infrared regions. The dielectric layers comprise a medium having an index of refraction n.sub.o, and at least two layers deposited by vaporization of material having alternatively high and low indices of refraction, n.sub.2 and n.sub.1, respectively. The layers having the high and low refractive indices exhibit the same effective optic layer thickness equal to (1/4) (j+1) .lambda..sub.1, where j = even integers, for the refractive index structure n.sub.s (n.sub.1, n.sub.2).sup.k n.sub.o, or n.sub.s (n.sub.1, n.sub.2).sup.k n.sub.1 n.sub.o and n.sub.1 = index of refraction of the first layer connected to the medium, n.sub.2 = index of refraction of the second layer connected serially to the first layer, and k = 0, 1, 2, . . . The resulting reflected wave is polarized parallel or vertically to the plane of incidence.

Abstract: Apparatus and method for changing the degree of polarization of light in a waveguide such as an optical fiber. A portion of the cladding of a strand of fiber optic material is removed, and a body of birefringent material is mounted in the area in which the material has been removed in close proximity to the core of the fiber. The birefringent material modifies the propagation of two polarization modes within the fiber in such manner that one of the modes is coupled to a bulk wave mode and removed from the guide, while the second mode excites no bulk waves and remains guided.

Abstract: A spectral polarization separator (SPS) designed to separate two wavelength-separated signals applied to the SPS with the same state of polarisation (SOP) into signals with orthogonal SOP's comprises two or more birefringent fibre elements optically in series. The differential delays and relative orientations of these elements are chosen so that polarisation separation is effected without introducing any polarisation mode dispersion (PMD). This contrasts with a prior art single birefringent element SPS whose operation necessarily does introduce PMD. A particular application for the SPS is in a dual wavelength transmitter designed for overcoming polarization hole-burning effects in a long-haul optically amplified transmission system.

Abstract: This invention provides apparatus and methods for converting a lightwave of an arbitrary polarization propagating in a single mode optical fiber into a wave having a single linear polarization state. A polarization couples light of an undesired polarization out of the fiber, and a photodetector produces an error signal responsive to light coupled from the fiber. Control circuitry processes the error signal to produce control signals which are input to a polarization of light input to the polarizer to null the error signal. With the error signal maintained at a minimum value the light input to the polarizer and, hence, the light ouput therefrom is a wave having only the desired linear polarization.
