    Abstract: A disclosure is presented for estimating height of an object using ultrasonic sensors carried onboard a vehicle. The height may be estimated by generating ultrasonic distance measurements based on a time of flight associated with ultrasonic reflections detected with the ultrasonic sensors, generating a three-dimensional (3D) occupancy grid to volumetrically represent at least a portion of an environment within field of view of the ultrasonic sensors, the 3D occupancy grid including a plurality of volumetric pixels (voxels), assigning a count value to each of the voxels based on the distance measurements, and estimating the height according to a relative spatial relationship between the vehicle and the voxel having the count value with a greatest value.

    Abstract: A protective cover protects a connector coupling portion which is an electrical connection between an on-vehicle sensor to be mounted on a vehicle body component and a wiring. This protective cover includes a protection portion and a fixing portion. The protection portion covers the connector coupling portion at which a sensor-side connector which is provided on the on-vehicle sensor side and which extends in an extending direction is coupled to a wiring-side connector which is provided on the wiring side and which is to be coupled to the sensor-side connector while moving relatively with respect to the sensor-side connector in a coupling direction opposite to the extending direction. The fixing portion is integrally provided with the protection portion so as to be fixed on the on-vehicle sensor side.

    Abstract: A retainer member is equipped with a microphone facing portion, a drain path, and a stamped wall portion. The microphone facing portion is formed in a cylindrical shape matching an ultrasonic microphone is disposed outside the ultrasonic microphone in a radial direction extending radially from a longitudinal center line. The microphone facing portion extends from a body retaining portion toward a base side in an axial direction. The drain path extends through the microphone facing portion in the radial direction and is capable of discharging water from an inner space in the microphone facing portion. The stamped wall portion is formed in the microphone facing portion and faces the drain path through the longitudinal center line.

    Abstract: An ultrasonic sensor includes an ultrasonic element and an element accommodation case. A side wall portion of the element accommodation case has a tubular shape surrounding a directional central axis. A bottom wall portion and a top wall portion of the element accommodation case cover ends of the side wall portion in a direction along the directional central axis. The top wall portion has a diaphragm portion. The bottom wall portion supports the ultrasonic element. For example, the ultrasonic element is opposed to the diaphragm portion across a gap defining an interval corresponding to an integral multiple of half of a wavelength of ultrasonic vibration. Alternatively, the diaphragm portion is formed of a material having an acoustic impedance of 50×105 Pa·s/m or more and 5000×105 Pa·s/m or less, and has a thickness of 1 mm or less.
