A weighing device is disclosed which comprises a frame, a pan element for supporting a load to be weighed, a channel member connected to the pan for retaining a plurality of weight elements in a vertically movable manner, a motor supported within the frame and a shaft member operatively connected to and extending from the motor, the shaft member including a spring for supporting the pan element. A plurality of collapsible support members are secured at one end thereof to the frame and each have at their opposite ends a device that is adapted to receive and lift one of the weight elements when the support member is in an extended and non-collapsed position. A camming arm is secured to the shaft member and extends in a direction toward the support members. A switch is provided for energizing the motor when the pan is depressed by a load. The motor turns the shaft member and guides the camming arm into contact with successive collapsed support members in a step-by-step manner to place a number of the support members in an extended position and lift a corresponding number of the weights substantially equal to the weight of the load.

An automatic circuit is provided for a switching motor of electromechanical, self-stabilizing balance having electromechanical compensation. An analog transducer produces an analog measured value which triggers operation of a switching motor whenever an upper or lower limiting value is exceeded, the analog measured value being applicable to a display device. A computer, which actuates a control circuit for the switching motor and the display is connected to the analog transducer via an analog-digital converter, the converter being operatively arranged to derive fine information which is fed to the computer and high-speed coarse or preliminary information which is likewise supplied to the computer ahead of the fine information, which triggers said switching motor in event one or more limiting values is exceeded.

A weight switching mechanism for a substitution type analytical balance is provided which permits the automatic selection and lifting of the required substitution weights from the gimbal assembly of a balance beam to allow accurate weighing of an unknown mass. A capacitive/electromagnetic feedback device is provided for sensing changes in the relative balance of the beam with respect to the applied unknown mass. The resultant current is applied to a force coil which maintains the beam in null position. A current related signal is converted to a digital input signal which is applied to a memory and control circuit and electronically displayed. A series of electromagnets, mounted below a printed circuit board and positioned to correspond with each substitution weight, is provided. The printed circuit board is arranged to lift upon release of the balance beam. The release of the beam causes the control circuit to selectively energize those magnets whose corresponding weights approximate the total weight of the unknown mass. The raising of the printed circuit board removes the selected weights from the gimbal assembly allowing a precise measurement of the remaining unbalance.

This force measuring apparatus includes a balance beam, means for applying a force representative of a load to be weighed to the balance beam, and means for applying counterweights in preselected steps to the balance beam. A signal is picked up from the position of the beam and is used to actuate a display indicating the weight of the load. The balance beam moves within a limited range of positions. Whenever it approaches one end of its limited range, a maximum or minimum signal is produced and controls a motor to drive the counterweight means to apply counterweights to the beam or to remove counterweights, as required to restore the balance beam to its limited range of positions. The display is concurrently reset to compensate for the change in the counterweight, so that the display accurately indicates the weight of the load.
