Abstract: Systems and methods for adjustable interlacing of drying rollers in a print system. One system is an apparatus that includes first rollers that conduct heat from a heat source, and dry a web of print media as the web travels over a front side of the first rollers in a first direction. A last roller of the first rollers turns the web in a second direction. The apparatus also includes second rollers disposed a distance above the first rollers and that transport the web in the second direction. The apparatus further includes a movement mechanism that reduces the distance between the second rollers and the first rollers to cause the second rollers to occupy spaces between the first rollers so that the web traveling in the second direction contacts a back side of the first rollers to further dry the web.

Abstract: A bearing including a wearable section including a wear sensor is provided. The bushing includes a wear sensor that provides feedback to a user relating to the amount of useable life of the bearing that has been used. The sensor may be in the form of a wire imbedded in the wearable section of the bearing such that as the wearable section wears over time, the wire may be worn through breaking a circuit including the wire. An indicator module can sense the breakage of the wire and determine the amount of useable life of the bearing that has been used. In one implementation, the bearing is used in a drying drum. In one form of the invention, a method of monitoring wear of the bearing is provided that includes monitoring changes in electrical properties of a sensor mounted in the bearing.

Abstract: The present invention relates to heating systems for drying wet coatings such as printing inks, paint, sealants, etc. applied to a substrate. In particular, the invention relates to a drying system in which a blower having an inlet directs a current of heated gas such as air towards a wet coating on a substrate to dry the coating and wherein the heated air is circulated back to the inlet of the blower once the air impinges the coating on the substrate. The present invention also relates to a drying system in which the substrate is supported about a thermally conductive roll having a plurality of energy emitters disposed within the conductive roll along a length of the conductive roll. The plurality of energy emitters are controlled to selectively emit energy along the length of the conductive roll. The dryer system preferably includes means for sensing temperatures of the roll along the length of the conductive roll, wherein the energy emitted by the energy emitters along the length of the roll varies based upon the sensed temperatures along the length of the roll.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to a method and apparatus for drying a web of paper utilizing impulse drying techniques. In the method of the invention for drying a paper web, the paper web is transported through a pair of rolls wherein at least one of the rolls has been heated to an elevated temperature. The heated roll is provided with a surface having a low thermal diffusivity of less than about 1.times.10.sup.-6 m.sup.2 /s. The surface material of the roll is preferably prepared from a material selected from the group consisting of ceramics, polymers, glass, inorganic plastics, composite materials and cermets. Abstract: A single wire dryer group for a web producing, and particularly a papermaking, machine. A plurality of heatable drying cylinders arrayed in a row. A respective suction reversing roll is disposed between adjacent drying cylinders. An endless support belt for the web to be dried travels alternately over a drying cylinder over the next adjacent reversing roll and then over the next adjacent drying cylinder. Movable bearings support each of the reversing rolls so that the distance between the reversing roll and at least the preceding drying cylinder in the path of the belt is variable. The direction of motion of the berarings is parallel to the central plane joining the axes of the two drying cylinders adjacent the respective reversing roll. The reversing roll has an initial normal position closer to the preceding web supplying drying cyinder and further from the following web receiving drying cylinder. The bearings are selectively also movable over a large distance from the respective adjacent drying cylinders. An air blast box blows upon the web on the support belt passing over the reversing roll.
