Abstract: Safety systems requiring intentional function activation and material testing systems including safety systems requiring intentional function activation are disclosed. An example material testing system includes: an actuator configured to control an operator-accessible component of the material testing system; an operator interface comprising a plurality of inputs; a pressure sensitive surface configured to: detect the presence of a pressure on the surface; and output a pressure signal in response to detecting the pressure; and one or more processors configured to: control the actuator based on at least one of a material testing process or an input from the operator interface; and require two or more inputs to be received to permit at least one operation of the actuator, at least one of the two or more inputs comprising the non-detection signal.

Abstract: A safety switch system for a machine having a ram which can be cycled toward and away from a workstation includes a pair of trip switch triggers disposed on handgrips remote from the workstation and an anvil switch trigger coupled to the machine at the workstation. The trip switch triggers are operable to effect a first signal, and the anvil switch trigger is operable to effect a second signal. The handgrips are coupled to a workpiece holder which is movable to align a selected area of a workpiece in the tooling ram path and to move the workpiece into actuating engagement with the anvil switch trigger. A control system is provided for cycling the ram upon sensing the first and second signals.

Abstract: A safety apparatus is mounted to the side of a bed of a power press machine on which an operator is positioned for ensuring safety of the operator of the power press machine. The safety apparatus includes a table, for supporting the front end portion of a workpiece, fitted so as to be movable toward and away from the bed at substantially the same height as a fixed mold set to the bed side and on the side of the bed where the operator is positioned. A pair of two-hand operation type switches are fitted to the front side portion of the table with a gap between them, and are operated by both hands of the operator. A deactivating switch is provided for deactivating the pair of two-hand operation type switches when a movable mold set to slide portion side of the power press machine approaches to within predetermined distance of the fixed mold set to the bed side to provide a safety state. Thus, the slide portion is allowed to operate only when the pair of two-hand operation type switches are operated by both hands of the operator and are turned on.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for enhancing safety in operating a brush chipper. A remote-enabled warning light flashes any time the brush chipper may be operated via a wireless remote control module. Workers on the ground are thereby notified the functions of the brush chipper may be changed in a manner not evident from their vantage point. Additionally, for remote operation to be enabled, two switches must both be in a remote-enable position and a feed control bar must be in neutral. Any change in these aspects will remove control from the remote module and make the machine controllable only at the controls on the brush chipper.

Abstract: A method and a device for starting a machine, in particular, a printing press, using a sensor or sensor field which emits a start signal during the approach of a part of the body of a machine operator. Abstract: Apparatus and associated methods relate to dual safety touch button systems for generating machine operation commands, according to predetermined safety guidelines, from status information received via an intercommunications link (ICL) operably connecting the dual safety touch buttons (STBs). In an illustrative example, each of a pair of STBs includes a processor configured to receive, via an intercommunications link port, status information from the other STB. In response to the received information and predetermined safety guidelines, the STBs may generate machine operation commands that operate a pair of relay switches. In some embodiments, each STB may be activated within a substantially simultaneous period (e.g., less than 0.5 seconds) to actuate corresponding relay switches for operating a potentially dangerous machine.
