A seal arrangement comprises: a swellable member and a sealing member disposed on a surface of the swellable member; wherein the swellable member comprises a condensed expandable graphite material. The condensed expandable graphite material in the swellable composition and the swellable member has a bulk density of about 1 to about 8 g/cm3 and comprises expandable graphite.

摘要: A seal device that may be for a variable area fan nozzle (VAFN) assembly of a turbofan engine is positioned between first and second surfaces configured to move between close and distant positions. The seal device includes a first electrode engaged to the first surface and a second electrode spaced between the first and second surfaces and spaced from the first electrode. A resilient first element of the device is disposed between and engages to the first and second electrodes, and is configured to move between contracted and expanded states when the electrodes are energized. A resilient second element of the device opposes the second surface and is engaged to the second electrode. The second element is configured to move between a compressed mode when the first and second surfaces are in the close position and an extended mode when the first and second surfaces are in the distant position.

摘要: A plug is made of a compressible and resilient material, and includes a tip and a base greater in diameter than the tip. The plug is configured so that the plug can be compressed and inserted tip first into an orifice exposed by disconnection of members of a fluid-bearing system such that the plug expands to seal the orifice when the plug is released. A handle is attached to the plug and extends from the base and is configured to facilitate removal of the plug from the orifice, the handle including a ring and being formed from the same material as is the plug.

摘要: A high-pressure connection in a conduit or enclosure utilizing a bidirectional, pressure-energized seal. Male and female flanges are provided, where one of the flanges has a recess that accommodates a seal ring. The outer peripheries of the two flanges' sealing surfaces are in contact with each so that clamping, bolting and bending stresses are not borne by the seal ring. The seal ring has a cross-section that includes a solid body and two V shaped sealing portions that extend from the body at an angle between 90 and 160 degrees. Each sealing portion has a set of opposing sealing faces with a cavity between them, so that fluid pressure within the cavity urges the sealing faces outward from the first cavity toward the flanges.

摘要: In order to provide a cylinder head gasket, comprising at least one gasket sheet, with at least one combustion chamber opening and a combustion chamber bead, the height of which may be elastically deformed and surrounds the combustion chamber opening, and at least one deformation limiting means limiting the deformation of the combustion chamber bead, wherein the deformation limiting means assures adequate protection of the combustion chamber bead and adequate sealing surface pressure over a wide range of operating conditions of the engine, it is proposed that the cylinder head gasket comprises a compensation means which comprises at least one compensation element, the height of which varies essentially reversibly when the operating status of the engine changes, and which at least partially supports both the combustion chamber bead and the deformation limiting means.

In another embodiment, a method comprising disposing an active device comprising a shape memory polymer in a gap between two opposing surfaces; wherein the active device is operative to exhibit a memorized shape in response to a thermal activation signal; activating the active device with a thermal activation signal to increase a dimension of the active device; filling the gap between the opposing surfaces, and cooling the device to set a new gap filling dimension.

摘要: A sealing device that may expand more planar dimensions due to internal thermal expansion of a filler material. The sealing material is of a composition such that when desired environment temperatures and internal actuating pressures are reached, the sealing materials undergoes a permanent deformation. For metallic compounds, this permanent deformation occurs when the material enters the plastic deformation phase. Polymers, and other materials, may be using a sealing mechanism depending on the temperatures and corrosivity of the use. Internal pressures are generated by either rapid thermal expansion or material phase change and may include either liquid or solid to gas phase change, or in the gaseous state with significant pressure generation in accordance with the gas laws. Sealing material thickness and material composition may be used to selectively control geometric expansion of the seal such that expansion is limited to a specific facing and or geometric plane.
