    摘要: A gear transmission is provided including at least a first and a second shaft with substantially fixed and substantially parallel axes of rotation, a transmission housing with a first and a second wall that extends perpendicular to the axes of rotation, and a plurality of gearwheels that are rotationally fixed or rotationally fixable to the shafts. The shafts include at least one input shaft and at least one output shaft, the shafts being suspended by bearings that are seated in the first and second walls. The first wall is connected to the second wall with at least one rod in order to reduce deflections in operation of the first and second walls.

The method includes the step of providing a differential carrier housing having a forward opening and a rear opening. The method further includes inserting several internal components of the drive axle assembly through the rear opening of the carrier housing including input and output gears, a driven gear, a pinion shaft which is rotatably coupled to the driven gear, and a power divider subassembly having a plurality of differential gears. Insertion of these components through the rear opening facilitates the use of a one-piece differential carrier housing with small front openings and maximum structural integrity.

    摘要: A pinion shaft subassembly for a tandem drive axle assembly is provided. The preassembled subassembly includes a bearing cage, bearings disposed within the bearing cage, a pinion shaft disposed about an axis and supported on the bearings, and a driven gear disposed about the pinion shaft. The bearing cage defines a mounting flange that extends radially outwardly and is configured to mount to a corresponding mounting flange of a drive axle housing. The flange is configured such that the subassembly is installed in the drive axle housing from the rear of the housing rather than the forward end. As a result, the housing may be made of a unitary construction.

    摘要: An axle housing cover is provided including a generally dome-shaped portion having a first thickness with the dome-shaped portion terminating in a perimeter edge. The perimeter edge has a second thickness greater than the first thickness with the perimeter edge providing a weld surface. Preferably, the second thickness is sufficiently thicker than the first thickness to provide adequate size and strength for the weld. The second thickness provides a weld height greater than the first thickness. Since the dome-shaped portion has a reduced thickness, reinforcing ribs may be formed in the dome-shaped portion to provide increased structural integrity. The cover may include a flange extending radially from the cover, which provides the weld surface that is then welded to the axle housing.

    摘要: An automatic transmission for a city bus and other highway vehicles comprises an engine-mounted gearbox with a laterally offset drive output to the rear wheels through a propeller shaft and differential drive unit. The gear box has four layshafts grouped round the drive input shaft. Multiplate pneumatic clutches, one on each layshaft, select transmission ratios under the control of a driver's selector switch acting through an electronic control unit and an electro-pneumatic valve supplied with air by a compressor. The control unit includes a retarder function provided by simultaneous partial engagement of the first and second gear clutches when the vehicle is in third or fourth gear. Access to the clutches for servicing is provided by end covers on the gearbox whereby the clutch elements can be replaced without stripping the gearbox.

    摘要: An axle lubrication system is provided utilizing an especially configured differential carrier housing adapted to be mounted to an axle housing with the axle housing oriented either upside-down or right-side-up. In either orientation, the lubrication system of the present invention provides a positive lubrication flow to the differential in either a forward or reverse direction of operation. The differential bearing support defines first and second lubricant passages and a differential carrier housing defines first and second lubricant troughs, communicating, respectively, with the first and second lubricant passages. Each of the lubricant troughs has an opening adjacent the pinion gear such that the first lubricant trough receives splash from the pinion gear, for either direction of rotation of the pinion gear, with the axle mechanism in the right-side-up position and the second lubricant trough receives the splash from the pinion gear, in either direction of rotation, with the axle mechanism in the upside-down position. Thus, the use of pick up director members is eliminated and positive lubricant flow, independent of lubricant temperature, is provided in all four modes of operation.
