The invention relates to a cylindrical elastomeric bearing with wide angular deflection comprising three cylindrical elements: a central element (1) and two lateral elements (2, 3) arranged either side of the central element (1). Vibration absorbers are provided which utilize a torsional spring and a dynamic mass to control vibrations that occur within the structure to which they are attached. Additionally, pipeline systems are provided which utilize such vibration absorbers including a mass and a torsional spring to control the vibrations that occur within the pipeline system. In various embodiments of the present invention, the torsional spring is one or more elastomer elements coupled between the dynamic mass and a support frame to produce a spring force responsive to pivotal rotation of the dynamic mass relative to the support frame. In various embodiments, one or more elastomer elements arranged in series or in parallel may be used as the torsional spring to provide a desired vibratory dampening characteristic for applications, such as pipelines. Use of such torsional springs may provide a more simplified design with less mechanical joints which may be less susceptible to failure in harsh environments.

A shock-absorbing joint absorbs shock forces by distortion of elastomeric material under torque. One form of the shock-absorbing joint has an inner cylinder fitting within an outer cylinder so as to extend longitudinally beyond each end of the outer cylinder and provide an annular space between the cylinders. A body of elastomeric material, such as rubber, fills the annular space and is affixed to the inside surface of the outer cylinder and the outside surface of the inner cylinder. Inner and outer cylinder pivot members are affixed to the inner and outer cylinder, respectively, and are perpendicular to the common pivot axis of the cylinders. Two or three of such shock-absorbing joints may be used to form a shock-absorbing assembly that is particularly useful in protecting marine platforms.
