The invention relates to a method for supplying fuel to a combustion engine which has an air inlet provided with a gas valve and an output shaft and wherein a fuel line in which a fuel supply device is arranged debouches into the air inlet. The method comprises of providing a pump with an adjustable, substantially continuous flow rate for the fuel supply device, determining the position of the gas valve, determining the rotation speed of the shaft, ascertaining herewith the required fuel flow rate and adjusting the pump accordingly. The invention further relates to a combustion engine of which the fuel supply is controlled as according to the above specified method.

Supply of fuel is stopped when fuel pressure sensed by a pressure sensor provided upstream of a regulator is at a predetermined value or less to avoid abnormal combustion caused by improper adjustment of air/fuel ratio. Even slight variation of the fuel pressure is sensed by monitoring the fuel pressure in an interval after closing a fuel shut-off valve once opened to re-opening of it. In addition, an abnormal state in the fuel system is detected by comparing an accumulated value of amount of injected fuel and an estimated value of fuel consumption in the tank. Furthermore, the peak current value of the fuel injection valve is controlled so that, when the engine at a low temperature is started, lift load of the injection valve is larger than sticking force of the injection valve, thereby preventing such situation where the injection valve is frozen so that it cannot supply fuel to the engine. In this case, the engine can be smoothly started by simultaneously controlling the valve open time. Furthermore, the temperature of the regulator is properly maintained so that optimum function can be exhibited by controlling the flow rate of cooling water flowing through a water passage provided in the regulator for regulating the fuel gas pressure.

A low pressure pump and high pressure pump from a fuel tank are arranged in series between a reservoir tank and fuel injectors. A pressure at the output of the low pressure pump is detected to determine if the fuel tank is empty, and when it is determined from the pressure at the outlet of the small pump that the fuel tank is empty, the operation of the high pressure pump is stopped to thereby prevent a generation of bubbles in the reservoir tank. An electronic and mechanical fuel feeding system comprises a mechanical fuel induction system coupled with an electronic fuel injection system through a diverter valve in fluid communication with a mechancial pump. The diverter valve includes a valve actuator responsive to an electrical signal to couple the inlet of the diverter valve with the outlet of the valve connected in fluid communication with electronically controlled injector nozzles. Alternatively, absence of an electrical control signal at the valve actuator causes coupling of the inlet of the diverter valve to a second outlet coupled in fluid communication with a mechanical carburetion system. In the preferred embodiment, the electronic fuel injection system comprises a control circuit responsive to changes in engine speed, manifold pressure, exhaust gas temperature and cylinder temperature so that accurately metered amounts of fuel are delivered by the injector nozzles to the engine cylinders. Since the amount of fuel supplied to the injector nozzles by a mechanical pump may exceed the amount necessary to efficiently operate the engine, a fuel return line downstream of the injector nozzles returns excess fuel to the fuel tank through a restricted orifice to prevent excess depletion of fuel at the injector nozzles.
