Abstract: In a carburetor induction throat, a plate carries a bracket with two parallel ears having coaxial circular openings therethrough. A bushing inserted through the circular openings has sectorshaped stops at one end for engagement with the plate to prevent rotation of the bushing and for engagement with an ear to prevent withdrawal of the bushing in one direction. The bushing further includes one or more deformable projections for engagement with an ear to prevent withdrawal of the bushing in the other direction and one or more deformable fingers at the other end tapering inward to facilitate bushing insertion. A link member includes a pin for insertion in the bushing having a circumferential groove at its free end to directly engage or hold a clip to engage the deformable fingers at the other end of the bushing in order to prevent withdrawal of the pin from the bushing.

Abstract: In a preferred embodiment in an air valve carburetor, a throttle cam is rotatably disposed downstream of the air valve in an air inlet assembly having substantially rectangular cross-section. The surface profile of the cam generates a pair of convergentdivergent nozzles of the Laval type, whereby the air flow ambient the cam may pass through shock waves downstream of the throat for enhanced atomization of fuel droplets. Fuel is supplied anterior the throttle cam in proportion to inlet air flow by means of a metering rod responsive to the air valve position.

Abstract: In an air valve carburetor the air valve is connected by a link to one end of a lever pivoted at the opposite end. Intermediate the link and the pivot point, a hanger extends from the lever to a metering rod to position the metering rod in accordance with air valve position. A thermostat responsive to engine operating temperature and a vacuum break unit control the lever pivot point to provide starting and cold enrichment. A cold transient enrichment device bleeds air into the vacuum break unit to increase cold enrichment during acceleration.

Abstract: A downdraught carburettor of the constant pressure type has a mixing chamber 2 with an operator-controlled throttle valve 3 at its downstream end and a choke valve 10, which is operated by a diaphragm box 20 in dependence upon the pressure in the mixing chamber 2, at its upstream end. Fuel is supplied to the mixing chamber from an annular duct 5 through ports 6 to the wall of the mixing chamber down which the fuel flows in the form of a thin film. The film is evaporated to form the mixture by a heating jacket 16 which surrounds the mixing chamber 2 and is heated by engine cooling water or exhaust gases. In order to prevent the film of fuel from being broken up before it has been heated and evaporated, which tends to happen owing to turbulence in the air stream caused by the choke valve 10, an inner tube 11 is provided. The choke valve 10 is situated in the upstream end of the inner tube 11 so that the fuel film is screened by the tube 11 from any turbulence caused by the valve 10. Air flow to draw fuel from the ports 6 and build up the film on the wall of the mixing chamber takes place through narrow annular ducts 12 between the tube 11 and the surrounding mixing chamber wall, these narrow ducts being uniformly spaced apart around the whole of the outside of the tube 11.

Abstract: Disclosed is a carburetor which regulates the supply of fuel and air in response to the vacuum pressure conditions in the mixing chamber between a downstream butterfly throttle valve and an upstream butterfly air valve. Liquid fuel is supplied to the mixing chamber through a nozzle with a number of small orifices and its delivery is controlled by a fuel supply valve operated by the air valve shaft. The air valve and fuel supply valve are operated in unison by a vacuum responsive actuator connected to the mixing chamber and adapted to adjust the air flow through the air valve in response to mixing chamber vacuum pressure. A second vacuum responsive actuator connected to the intake manifold is used to enrichen or lean the fuel mixture ratio in response to engine demand by bleeding air into the fuel supply line between the fuel valve and nozzle. The fuel valve has a vertically reciprocal piston which is operated in a vertical bore in the carburetor housing by an eccentric pin on the air valve shaft, and a cam follower with a self adjusting fulcrum. Choking for cold engine starts is achieved by biasing the air valve butterfly or regulating an outside air bleed line by a temperature responsive valve.

Abstract: A carburetor is disclosed of the variable venturi type, which has a bypass passage bypassing the throttle valve, which is controlled during starting and warming up of the engine by a piston which adjusts its flow resistance, and which is urged against the biasing action of a spring by the vacuum suction downstream of the throttle valve. The maximum open position of this piston is controlled by a heat-sensitive element which advances this position in the direction of closing the bypass passage as the engine warms up, until it is completely closed when the engine is warm. Air is fed into a supplier which supplies fuel to the carburetor inlet passage to mix with the fuel supplied thereby in an amount which varies from a minimum when the vacuum downstream of the throttle valve is minimum to a maximum when the vacuum downstream of the throttle valve is maximum. Further, the amount of fuel supplied by the fuel supplier is adjusted to be greater when the engine temperature is lower than when it is higher. Thereby choking action is provided for a cold engine, and also a function of providing an enriched mixture upon acceleration during warming up is provided.

Abstract: A twin air valve carbureter has a single bar which extends diametrically across the two draught tubes upstream thereof, and two air valve flaps which are mounted on opposite sides of the bar, so as to extend across both draught tubes, and are hinged at their ends remote from the bar. Both the flaps co-operate with the bar to define a throat of variable area. The fuel discharge ports are formed in the bar and comprise outwardly-divergent slot ports. A depression responsive fluid pressure motor is linked to each of the flaps to provide compensation for the effect of the reduction of the effective area of each flap as that flap opens. A novel linkage is disclosed for linking a fuel metering needle to one of the flaps.
