An axial flow rotary valve for an engine, that is rotatable about an axis within the bore of a cylinder head. The valve communicating with a respective cylinder in which a piston reciprocates, and an ignition means associated with the cylinder. The valve is provided with inlet and exhaust peripheral openings that periodically communicate with cylinder through a window in the bore. A combustion chamber is formed in the space between the crown of the piston at top dead centre and the cylinder head and the valve. The ignition means comprising first and second spark plugs, each of said spark plugs having a nose located at one end thereof exposed to the combustion chamber, said noses being disposed on opposite sides of said window within the axial extremities of said window.

Disclosed in the field of the four-cycle reciprocating piston internal combustion engine is an invention for a rotary ported intake and exhaust system and super-atmospherically charged on demand engine. This invention replaces the inefficient reciprocating valve system with a friction free rotating shaft with ports and passageways to produce the four cycles of the engine. It also replaces the accessory externally mounted compressors now used to super charge the engine by the use of two cylinders sharing the same minimum volume totally closed crankcase. As both pistons travel upward, they draw in air or air/fuel or that amount desired through a throttle body into the crankcase. As they travel downward, that cylinder on its intake cycle draws in air/fuel while the volume in the crankcase is compressed. Prior to the completion of the intake cycle, the crankcase pressure is released into that cylinder on its intake cycle super-atmospherically charging it. These cycles are then repeated for the other cylinder.

A complete rotary valve assembly and system is disclosed. The rotary valve includes a generally elongated valve body having first and second ends and a longitudinally extending axis of rotation. The rotary valve is mounted in a housing positioned above a head port of an engine. The rotary valve includes an intake port and an exhaust port defined by a valve body arranged for periodic communication with the head port and combustion chamber as the valve rotates along the axis of rotation. The rotary valve system of the present invention includes a secondary intake port for controlling the flow of intake gases into the rotary valve, a fuel injection system, an improved sealing system, a bifurcated valve body with separated intake and exhaust passages, a cooling and reduced emissions gas exhaust control system, and an adjustable throttle control.

A modular rotary discoid valve assembly includes a housing for positioning on an engine the piston and cylinder type. The housing includes an intake passage for conducting a working fluid to the cylinder and an exhaust passage for conducting the working fluid from the cylinder. The housing is formed with an internal cavity which intercepts the intake and exhaust passages, which cavity contains a rotary valve member having a window whose shape and/or angular positions on the disc varies with increasing distance from the disc axis. The window is so positioned that when the member is rotated to a first angular position, the window is located opposite the intake passage whereby the working fluid can flow along the intake passage through the window to the cylinder and when the member is rotated to a second angular position, the window is located opposite the exhaust passage so that the working fluid can flow from the cylinder through the window along the exhaust passage. Thus, the assembly alternately opens and closes the intake and exhaust passages in a periodic manner. Preferably also, the valve assembly includes a throttle bar slidably mounted in the housing parallel to the rotary valve member. The throttle bar has a hole which is positioned opposite the intake passage. The bar is movable toward and away from the axis of the rotary valve member between a first position which places the hole in the throttle bar opposite a radially inner portion of the valve member and a second position which places that hole opposite a radially outer portion of the valve member so that when the valve member is rotated, the open time of the intake passage can be controlled by the position of the throttle bar. A plurality of similar valve assemblies can be positioned adjacent to one another and concatenated so that they all operate in unison to control the working fluid flow to and from all the cylinders of a multi cylinder engine. The assembly is particularly suitable for converting an internal combustion engine so that it operates under steam power. Other applications for the assembly are also disclosed.

Intermittent sealing means are provided for preventing flow through the flow conduit, comprising a sealing surface intermittently positionable in stationary, sealing relationship across the conduit. Means are also provided for moving the sealing surface into such stationary sealing relationship with the flow conduit, and out of sealing relationship with the flow conduit in a manner correlating with the operation of the rotary valve means, to facilitate sealing as the valve operates.
