Abstract: Systems for forming or extending a tunnel or shaft within a working surface may include a ram accelerator assembly for accelerating a projectile into geologic material to weaken a region of the geologic material. A cutting tool may then be used to remove the weakened material. A collection assembly may be used to move debris away from the working surface while the projectile and cutting operations are performed to enable generally continuous use of the system. The number of projectiles that are accelerated and the rate at which projectiles are used may be controlled based on characteristics of the geologic material and the rate at which created debris may be removed.

Abstract: A tunnel excavation device includes a front body section and a rear body section. The front body section includes a cutter head, a cutter head support, peripheral plates, a roof shoe, and side shoes. The cutter head includes a plurality of roller cutters. The cutter head support supports the cutter head. The peripheral plates, the roof shoe, and the side shoes are provided to the outer circumference and can be collapsed inward. The rear body section is disposed to the rear of the front body section. The rear body section includes a gripper section. The gripper section obtains a reaction force for performing excavation.

Abstract: A boring machine comprises a forward section, a rear section, a parallel link mechanism, stroke sensors, pressure sensors, and a controller. The parallel link mechanism includes eight thrust jacks that change the position and attitude of the forward section with respect to the rear section. The controller computes a target allocation force to be allocated to eight thrust jacks on the basis of the sensing result from the stroke sensors and the pressure sensors, and controls the thrust jacks to perform stroke control on six of the thrust jacks and perform force control on two of the thrust jacks.

Abstract: A drill bit exchange device for a shield tunneling machine includes: a housing with an aperture; a valve body housed in a chamber of the housing, the valve body being pivotable about a pivot axis (Ob) inclined at a predetermined angle with respect to an axis perpendicular to the front of a cutter head; a bit-housing hole formed in the valve body to detachably accommodate a bit; and an exchange seal recess located at the front of the chamber and at a symmetrical position from the aperture with respect to the pivot axis (Ob). Abstract: An auxiliary tunneling apparatus includes a reaction force receiver and first and second split components. In the excavation of a second tunnel by a boring machine, the reaction force receiver forms a replacement face of a side wall of the second tunnel on a first tunnel side where the first and second tunnels intersect each other, and a gripper of the boring machine pushes against the replacement face. The first and second split components are installed to push against the side wall of the first tunnel, support the reaction force receiver within the first tunnel, and move back and forth with respect to the side wall of the first tunnel.
