Tunnels 82 are launched from a bottom part of shaft 80 by excavating a cavern 81 in which a tunnel boring machine is assembled and operated to bore the tunnels 82. Material from the tunnel excavation is transported from the tunnels via conveyor 87 to the material transport system established within the shaft during formation of the shaft which is operated to transport that material to an earth surface region.

In one example, a main, enlarged, cone-shaped cutting head is rotatable with the column for rotation about the column axis at a selected rate of speed, while the cutting wheel is additionally rotated about its wheel axis at a different selected speed, rotation of the cutting wheel and of the cutting head being continuous, the cutting wheel providing an advancing central bowl shaped recess adapted to serve as a lead or pilot hole to receive cuttings from the second enlarged main cutting head. A machine for boring a shaft in earth strata or the like. An annular support ring means having an outside diameter approximately equal to the diameter of the shaft which is selectively engageable or disengageable with the shaft wall by the use of clamping means is disclosed. A carriage means which is slidably mounted on the annular support ring means and orbital thereabout is also disclosed. A rotary cutting wheel means having a diameter substantially smaller than the diameter of the shaft is mounted on the carriage means and is axially displaceable with respect thereto for movement in a direction which may be parallel or inclined with respect to the axis of the shaft. Various drive means for moving the carriage means circumferentially about the annular support ring means, and for moving the rotary cutting wheel means in an axial direction with respect to the carriage means, and for rotating the rotary cutting wheel means are described. The use of the machine to make an overlapping helical path cut in earth strata whereby a generally cylindrical shaft is created is also described.

A method of sinking a shaft, particularly in unstable ground, comprises driving an annular shield into the ground and controlling the sinking speed of the driving shield by varying the cross-sectional area of the shield, and lining the excavated shaft behind the shield as it is advanced. An excavating device for forming the vertical shaft comprises an annular driving shield which is displaceable relative to an annular platform by fluid pressure operated piston and cylinder jacks connected therebetween. The structure includes an annular shield tail which is connected to the shield and extends rearwardly of the shield and the platform and the shield itself is provided with an inwardly directed taper and has prop means associated therewith for varying the affective taper and the affective cross-sectional area of the shield. The excavated shaft is lined behind the shield and the tail portion thereof as the shield is advanced. An annular machine platform is braced against the lining by telescopically movable braces which are fluid pressure driven to engage against the lining.

The drilling rig improves overall stability, increases pressure of the device and drilling torque, and provides more accurate guidance, thus improving efficiency of vertical shaft construction, shortening the period of vertical shaft construction and improving the quality of the completed well.

A device for excavating a shaft in which a suction line extends between a mining tool and a single intermediate storage container. During the continuous operation of the mining tool, the intermediate storage chamber can be filled via the suction line to a predetermined filling level, and when said level is reached, in the event of a lack of pressure in the suction line, an ejector door can be opened to fill at least one of the conveyor containers. Based on the arrangement of the opening area of the suction line in the immediate vicinity of the mining tool, the degraded material produced when there is no pressure in the suction line can be easily evacuated after restarting the suction line.
