A sliding door system includes an outer frame, a fixed door panel and a sliding door panel. The outer frame is formed from four frame elements of the same profile which can thus be mitered and connected by corner inserts. The sliding door panel sits on a saddle provided on the outer frame and slides longitudinally of the saddle. A weatherstrip element is carried on the sliding door panel between the saddle and a recess straddling the saddle. The sliding door panel is biased away from contact between the weatherstrip and the saddle but is moved transversely as it reaches the closed position by wedge members at the front edge and by a locking system at the rear edge to compress the weatherstrip to improve the sealing effect. A portion of the saddle is removed adjacent the fixed door panel to allow the sliding door panel to be removed from the top edge.

The guide rails extend parallel to each other and each have a clear inner width that is at least twice as large as the thickness of the sliding door. The upper and lower sliding-door mounts are each at most half as wide as the clear inner width of each guide rail, allowing moving the sliding door into recessed and lifted-out positions, each constituting a stable state. By overcoming a resistance force, the sliding door can be moved between stable states. The sliding door system is lightweight and robust, and enables sliding doors to be displaced freely without a particular sliding door being assigned in a fixed manner to a particular opening to be covered.

A horizontal sliding window construction is disclosed of the type including a fixed sash and a moving vent sash featuring a camming mechanism adapted to force the vent sash directly inward in the position which compresses a peripheral seal against the window frame facing surface to insure a weather tight closure of the window. The camming mechanism is operable in any position of the vent sash to secure the sash in a partially opened position. A closed position lock is created by operation of the mechanism moving the vent sash inward with the vent sash in the fully closed position by moving an aligned cutout on the vent sash frame into registry with a fixed locking projection on the window frame to lock the sash in the closed position.
