Abstract: Acrolein is a useful additive for treating hydrocarbon fluids, such as crude oil, for multiple purposes including, but not necessarily limited to, reducing or preventing microbial activity, scavenging hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and/or at least partially dissolving iron sulfide (FexSy). Acrolein can be stabilized against decomposition by mixing or combining it with at least one alkyl carbonate, which can also raise the flash point of the stabilized acrolein composition.

Abstract: A modified drilling mud is provided which addresses a problem of H2S and other gaseous contaminants in the environment around a well drilling platform or other well drilling operation by remediating or eliminating the gaseous contaminants in the fluids being extracted from the well. The drilling mud is modified by addition of a liquid treatment composition including water and collectively 35-55 weight percent of one or more hydroxide compounds, wherein a ratio of the liquid treatment composition to the drilling mud in the modified drilling mud is in a range of 10 gallons of the liquid treatment composition per 42,000 gallons of drilling mud to 100 gallons of the liquid treatment composition per 42,000 gallons of drilling mud.

The at least one chemical treatment agent can separate from the at least one particulate when located inside a fracture of a subterranean formation after a period of time.
