Abstract: A drilling fluid composition includes an aqueous base fluid, 0.01 to 5 wt. % of polyamine-functionalized activated carbon (AC-PAD), 0.1 to 10 wt. % of a shale material, 0.01 to 2 wt. % of a thickener, 0.1 to 10 wt. % of a fluid loss control additive, 0.01 to 5 wt. % of an adsorbent, and 1 to 20 wt. % of a borehole stabilizer. Each wt. % is based on a total weight of the drilling fluid composition. The AC-PAD is uniformly disposed on surfaces of the shale material. The shale material has an average pore size of 5 to 400 nanometers (nm). A method of preparing the AC-PAD and a method of drilling a subterranean geological formation.

Also disclosed herein are methods of temporarily blocking at least a portion of a well comprising providing a magnetorheological fluid in a well, applying a magnetic field to cause a mechanical response in said magnetorheological fluid thereby blocking at least a portion of the well, and removing the magnetic field to unblock the portion of the well. Also disclosed herein is a magnetorheological cement.

Abstract: A method of constructing a plugging device can include incorporating multiple filaments into the plugging device, and coating each individual filament with a swellable material. A plugging device for use in a subterranean well can include a body comprising multiple filaments, and a swellable material on each of the individual filaments. A system can include a plugging device conveyed by fluid flow into engagement with an opening, whereby the plugging device blocks flow through the opening. The plugging device can include multiple filaments, each of the multiple filaments being coated with a swellable material. The swellable material may seal against a surface of the opening.

Abstract: The method of fluid loss control is provided for the case of high-rate fluid loss. Two treatment fluids are provided, where a first treatment fluid comprising a carrier fluid, solids and a first polyelectrolyte, and a second treatment fluid comprising a carrier fluid and a second polyelectrolyte. Two polyelectrolytes in both treatment fluids are oppositely charged under the pumping conditions, being taken form the classes of polyanionic and polycationic polymers. Two treatment fluids are pumped separately to the zone with fluid loss. The mixing of two treatment fluids into the well creates low-permeability agglomerates that plugs the fluid leakage channel, preventing or reducing further fluid movement between the wellbore and subterranean formation. The plugging of thief zone can be temporary or permanent.

Abstract: A method for enhancing wellbore integrity and/or for sealing a wellbore by sealing formation or micro-annulus fractures in a wellbore. Such sealing can be at least partially accomplished by the use of timed expansion of an expandable sealant material that is placed a wellbore. The expansion of the expandable sealant material causes the cement surface or formation surface to be compressed, thereby creating a tight seal and/or eliminating annulus cracking, fracture, and/or gas channels in the wellbore. A degradable polymer can be used when restoration of the wellbore formation is desired.
