A process for separating indole from a mixture of indole with at least one hydrocarbon or its derivative which comprises the steps of contacting the mixture with a faujasite structured zeolite to selectively adsorb indole on the zeolite and contacting a desorbent A selected from the group consisting of C.sub.2-10 aliphatic or C.sub.7-10 aromatic ether compounds, C.sub.2-10 aliphatic ester compounds and C.sub.3-10 aliphatic ketone compounds with the indole-adsorbed zeolite to separate indole and the process which comprises, in addition, the step of contacting at least one desorbent B of the formula, ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is a C.sub.1-3 alkyl group, andR.sup.2 is a hydrogen atom or a C.sub.1-3 alkyl group,with the indole-adsorbed zeolite prior to the contact of the desorbent A with the indole-adsorbed zeolite.

The invention provides a process for the extraction of indoles which comprises the steps of firstly extracting indoles from an indoles containing mixture with formamide or a formamide-containing solution and subsequently contacting the extract with at least one organic solvent selected from the group consisting of ethers, aromatic hydrocarbons and halogenated hydrocarbons to recover indoles with the organic solvent. This process is applicable to an industrial scale extraction of indoles, because the extraction solvent system has a high extraction selectivity of indoles, is required in a small amount with almost no losses through the extraction and recovery steps and can be used repeatedly.

Described herein is a process for separating solid indole in refined form with an extremely high degree of purity from a mixture containing more than 50 wt % of indole, in which a pressure of 700-2500 atms is applied to the mixture in a high pressure vessel, and solid-liquid separation is effected continuedly under pressurized state with an initial temperature in the range of 50.degree.-65.degree. C.
