The bags protects the fruit from outside contaminants while maintaining a modified atmosphere environment around the fruit to preserve the freshness of the fruit. Furthermore, the bags are constructed in such a way that they have a flattened closed configuration and an fully opened configuration that allows them to efficiently fit into a generally cuboid, open-topped packaging box to be filled with fresh fruit and then seal around the fruit in the box, such as by sliding a slider across an upper closure of the bag.

A plant for manual packaging of crates with fruit and vegetable products includes a first mobile horizontal belt conveyor on which products are placed and a second mobile conveyor on which are placed a plurality of crates. The two conveyors are arranged on parallel horizontal planes. The upper surface of the second conveyor is arranged at least partially overlying the position of the first conveyor. A return conveyor is arranged on the same horizontal plane as the first mobile conveyor, and moving in a direction opposite to the first conveyor. Plural sensors beneath the disk detect the presence of produce at a predefined vertical distance from the lower plate. A control unit detects the instantaneous position of both overlying rotating plates and determines the speed of rotation of each of the rotating plates in a manner that depends on a pre-coded external signal generated by the sensors and by the instantaneous positions of the rotating plates. The control unit processes the information received and controls the respective angular speed of the plates so that the respective openings are vertically aligned, so as to distribute the produce to those bins in which an absence of underlying produce is sensed.

A harvest aid machine and method of use is provided comprising a machine having a main chassis. The main chassis includes a roof, a lateral conveyor belt, a chute for storing empty harvest containers and worker stations. The harvest aid machine is powered by a motor and moves using a directional wheel and two rear wheels. Workers load empty containers onto the chute and after the containers slide down the chute, the empty containers rest in a storage station accessible by additional workers. When a worker is ready to harvest a crop, the worker removes the container from the chute and places harvested crops inside the container. The worker then places the harvested crop filled container onto a worker station. After the worker collects multiple harvested crop filled containers, the worker pushes the containers onto a conveyor belt system, adjacent to the worker station, that runs laterally on the machine. When it is time to offload the containers, the conveyor belt system is activated and the containers slide down to one end of the machine to be loaded into a designated vehicle or area. The machine travels through the crop field and can gradually turn onto a different furrow when harvesting of the crops is complete in one area of the field.

A conveyer assembly used as part of an automated packaging system is disclosed. The conveyer assembly allows the container filling process and produce leveling process to be combined as a single process station in an automated packaging system. The conveyer assembly includes a pair of elastic belts trained about two pulleys, four vibration isolation rollers, and a vibrator mechanism. The vibration isolation rollers are mounted to the frame structure and positioned at incrementally higher positions, which creates a slight incline to the conveyer belts over the first half of the conveyer run. The highest isolation roller, which is located at the center of the conveyer assembly, isolates the first half of the conveyer run from the vibrations generated by the vibrator mechanism. Consequently, the first half of the conveyer run where the produce is deposited into the containers is stable and free from vibration, which reduces the loss of produce due to spillage. The vibration mechanism only affects the second half of the conveyer run where the produce is leveled within the containers.

A method for decreasing space requirements during storage, and preventing breakage during transport, of cut potatoes, is shown. This method comprises the steps of preparing potatoes to be cut for food use, cutting the potatoes into rectilinear solids with approximately rectangular cross-sections, having two sets of parallel side faces, each having a width dimension, arranging the rectilinear solids in plurality of close together side-by-side arrays in which one set of parallel side faces are substantially aligned, then stacking the arrays into orderly layers in which the second side faces of are substantially aligned, to create a close stacking mutual support arrangement, and enclosing the arrangement in a suitable container for shipping and storage. In this manner the close stacking arrangement substantially minimizes the storage space required for a unit weight of cut potatoes, and minimizes the exposed cut surfaces to minimize any deleterious effects of exposure to air during storage. At the same time, the close stacking arrangement also permits each rectilinear solid to provide support to its neighbors and in turn receive support from its neighbors, substantially minimizing the breakage of the cut potatoes caused by shifting movements and localized stresses during transport. The arrangement of cut potatoes in this manner is also shown.
