A method for producing an ultrathin-wall seamless metal tube, which employs a cold pilger mill of mechatronics drive type including a mechanism to give a feed and a turn angle to a tube material, utilizes a roll having a tapered groove whose diameter gradually increases or gradually decreases from an engaging entry side to a finishing exit side of a pair of rolls, and a tapered mandrel whose diameter similarly gradually increases from the engaging entry side to the finishing exit side to elongate the tube material by reducing a wall thickness while expanding a mid-wall diameter of the tube material. By giving amounts of a turn angle and/or a feed equivalent or nearly equivalent to the forward stroke to the tube material immediately before the start of a backward stroke, it is possible to achieve a further increase in the reduction-rate of rolling, a further reduction of wall thickness, and improvement of dimensional accuracy of the product.

A rocker mill includes a rollstand and a carriage for supporting and repositioning a workpiece extending through the rollstand. A first hollow-shafted electric motor is mounted on the carriage and includes a first hollow open-ended rotor and threaded nut through which the stationary feedscrew passes. The threaded nut is connected to the first motor to be rotated thereby in order to move the carriage longitudinally toward the rollstand. A second hollow-shafted electric motor is mounted on the carriage and includes a second hollow open-ended rotor and a clamp through which the workpiece passes. The clamp is actuated into clamping engagement with the workpiece for transmitting rotational and longitudinal movements thereto. Such mechanism for imparting rotary and longitudinal movements to the workpiece is of very low inertia and thus is able to reposition the workpiece with a high degree of precision.

Feeding means for feeding stock to the dies of a cold pilger mill and the like, comprising a pair of feed carriages having the usual stock clamps, and means for moving the carriages in opposite directions on the machine bed in line with the dies. The clamps on the carriage moving toward the dies are engaged with the stock to feed the same, while the clamps of the carriage moving away from the stock are disengaged from the latter. Means are provided to move the carriages in increments, including a novel drive coordinated with crank shaft movement to feed the stock within a planned and predetermined crank range and variably adaptable to suit the quality and degree of deformation of the stock.

The state of the art discloses cold rolling mills comprising a roll stand, at least one roll rotatably mounted to the roll stand, a feed clamping saddle for feeding a blank, and a first drive for the feed clamping saddle. Those cold rolling mills have ball spindle drives with a high rate of wear as the drive for the feed clamping saddle. In comparison the object of the present invention is to provide a cold rolling mill whose drive for the feed clamping saddle involves no or only very slight wear and which in addition permits a slow movement of the feed clamping saddle. According to the invention that object is attained by a cold rolling mill which has a direct electromechanical linear drive for the feed clamping saddle.

The rotary-driven rolls have, on their circumferential surfaces, narrowing work grooves matching in shape to the tapered rolling mandrel, which roll down the rolling material on the rolling mandrel. At the ends of the work passes the rolls release the rolling material at the two dead centers of the roll stand path so as to assist in the advancement and rotation of the rolling material. According to the invention, the tube-shaped rolling material and the rolling mandrel are driven asynchronously in the same rotational direction at different rotational speeds.

A method and apparatus for continuously feeding rolling stock through a cold pilger rolling mill. A rolling stock--either a continuous or so-called "endless" piece, or a plurality of serially fed, spaced-apart pieces--is initially fed into a roll stand by a feed side drive or transporting arrangement, and thereafter, drawn through the rolling mill by a delivery side drive or transporting arrangement that is located in a rolling direction, i.e. downstream, from the feed side drive arrangement. Once the leading free end of the rolling stock is grasped by the delivery side transporting arrangement, the feed side transporting arrangement ceases to feed the rolling stock through the rolling mill, i.e. forward feeding of the rolling stock is exclusively controlled by the delivery side transporting arrangement. Thus, the critical compressive stresses and/or buckling stresses typically experienced by the rolling stock as a result of pushing the stock through the rolling mill are prevented and the disruptions in the rolling process caused by these stresses are accordingly also prevented. The transporting arrangements are operable independent of each other and at transporting or rolling speeds dependent upon each other.

A device for feeding oblong workpieces, particularly for a cold pilger machine comprises first and second endless conveyors having opposed reaches extending substantially parallel and between which a workpiece is adapted to be fed by engagement with the conveyor. The conveyors are supported in a housing which is rotatably mounted in order to impart a rotation to the workpiece in addition to its transverse feeding movement. The apparatus includes an input or drive shaft connected through a first cam controlled gearing for controlling the rotation of the housing and connected through a second cam controlled gearing for controlling the advancement movement of the conveyors. The second cam controlled gearing includes a belt drive which provides for a variation of operation and a drive through planetary gearing and rotary gear members for effecting the drive of the conveyor elements.
