A method is provided for converting the hydrogen sulfide in a hydrogen sulfide containing feed gas into elemental sulfur by oxidizing the hydrogen sulfide with an oxygen containing gas to produce elemental sulfur in a Claus plant, wherein the oxygen containing gas is axially introduced into an end portion of the reaction cylinder of the Claus plant and the hydrogen sulfide containing gas is introduced through at least one gas inlet in the side wall of the reaction cylinder at an oblique or perpendicular angle with respect to the direction of the flow of the oxygen containing gas so that the hydrogen sulfide containing gas introduced through the side wall surrounds and swirls about the oxygen containing gas, thereby allowing higher combustion temperatures to be achieved within the reaction cylinder which enhances the efficiency of the combustion and enhances the efficiency of decomposing any ammonia in the gas while keeping the very hot zones away from the refractory material lining the interior of the reaction cylinder.

The baffle may be solid or hollow and in the latter case can be in fluid connection with the closed space (13) between the external wall (11) and the internal wall of the container at the local connection. The invention also relates to a container comprising one or several baffles of the type. The invention is of use in the chemical industry and in particular to the producers and users of baffles.

A liquid agitator having agitator blades attached to a rotary shaft centrally located within a liquid containing vessel is provided with a vibration suppressing stabilizer, consisting of one or more plates attached to the agitator shaft. The span of the stabilizer is somewhat less than the diameter of the agitator blades, but equal to at least about 20% of the blade diameter. The height of the stabilizer is also equal to at least about 20% of the blade diameter. The stabilizer is located in a portion of the liquid within the vessel which rotates about the agitator shaft with a tangential velocity proportional to the distance from the shaft. Interaction between this liquid and the stabilizer suppresses agitator vibrations.

The heat exchanger according to the invention consists of two flat or slightly incurved parallel surfaces formed in two sheets of metal (2) and (3). The longitudinal edge pieces (8) and (9) and transverse edge pieces (12) and (13) have rounded edges. The entire exterior surface is coated with enamel. These exchangers may be used in groups of several parallel units arranged inside a tubular body, or they may be disposed in a radiating pattern inside a cylindrical tank in a chemical reactor, forming a complex exchanger. This invention is of interest to manufacturers of industrial heat exchangers, particularly exchangers designed for the chemcial, pharmaceutical or agricultural/food industries.

A jacket for an enameled vessel with a lower outlet nozzle is described comprising an upper weld ring welded along the outer circumference of the vessel, and comprising a lower weld ring surrounding the lower outlet nozzle, and also the jacket as such. The upper weld ring is conically tapering to its lower end, and the lower end of the lower weld ring is shaped cylindrically. Therefore, the upper end of the jacket can be easily welded with the outer side of the lower end of the upper weld ring, since the lower end of the jacket can be moved into a proper position along the cylindrical end of the lower weld ring.
