The invention relates to equipment for use in the removal of relatively fine particulates from a first substance, using a second substance. The equipment includes a static, co-current contacting mixer section, having a plurality of stages defining a flow path, with a flow profile, for the first and the second substance, at least some of the stages being shaped to define a substantially curved flow path having an effective centre of curvature located to one side of the flow path, and wherein each adjacent stage has a centre of curvature on an opposite side of the flow path to provide a point of inflexion between adjacent stages and whereby, as the substances flow through the reactor between the adjacent stages, particles present in the first substance migrate through the second substance, first in one direction and then in a substantially opposite direction to promote interphasic interaction between the first and the second substance, the flow path characterised in being provided with an edge formation between at least two adjacent stages towards the point of inflexion so as to enhance the launch of the second substance on the outside of the curved flow path of one stage at relatively high velocity from the edge formation to the inside of the curved flow path of the adjacent stage, thus increasing the contact between the first and the second substances. The equipment also includes a cyclonic section and a spinner section. The invention also relates to a method for the removal of relatively fine particulates from a gas stream, using a scrubbing fluid, as well as a plastic composite material for the manufacture of the equipment.

The process includes powdering the carbonaceous fines, mixing the powdered carbonaceous fines with an organic liquid creating a slurry, adding a predetermined amount of an aqueous electrolyte to the slurry creating agglomerated particles, settling the large agglomerated particles resulting in a settled mixture of agglomerated coal fines and reagent liquor, and separating the agglomerated coal fines from the reagent liquor.

An agglomeration and precipitation assembly which includes an agglomeration device in combination with a precipitation device. The agglomeration device is intended to receive a turbulent gas stream containing fine suspended particles and to discharge the stream in which the major part of the fine particles have agglomerated in the form of larger particles. The precipitation device is provided downstream of the agglomeration device to receive the stream coming from the agglomeration device and to separate the larger particles from the gas stream. The fine particles can be separated from a turbulent gas stream by first agglomerating the fine particles in the form of larger particles, and then separating the larger particles by precipitation.

A thermophoretic arrangement (14a, 14b) is used to induce a thermophoretic particle movement from a first, warmer, region (16) of the input flow channel to a second, cooler, region (18) of the input flow channel (10). A sensor (24) comprises a particle sensor component at or downstream of the first region (16) of the input flow channel (10). The invention provides the benefit of pre-filtering (e.g. removal of most suspended solids/liquids) without the need for a physical filter that can become blocked.

Interaction between two different species of particles in a fluid stream is promoted by generating turbulent eddies in the fluid stream. The turbulent eddies are designed to be of such size and/or intensity that the two species of particles are entrained into the eddies to significantly different extents. Consequently, the different species of particles follow different trajectories, and the likelihood of collisions or interactions between the particles is increased. Optimum collision rates will occur for a system which maintains a Stokes Number (St) much less than 1 for one species, and or order 1 or greater for the other species. The invention has particular application in air pollution control, by promoting agglomeration of fine pollutant particles in air streams into larger particles to thereby facilitate their subsequent removal from the air streams.
