A highly controllable thermal distillation reactor system (25) and method (30) allow volatile compounds to be efficiently removed from the plant matter without use of solvents, and can separate compounds with different vapor pressure characteristics. The system has a Thermal Distillation Reactor (TDR) (13) into which the plant material is charged. The TDR provides for high rates of heat transfer coupled with small thermal diffusion length scales to allow substantially all of the plant material to be within a narrow temperature range, which enhances the separation purity cuts. The system provides high removal efficiencies whilst minimizing any impurities resulting from pyrolysis or thermal destruction to the cellulose, hemi-cellulose or lignin within the plant material.

An apparatus, in one embodiment, includes a liquid receptacle, a heat exchanger, a heating mechanism, a compressor, and a condenser. While the liquid receptacle is able to receive a stream of liquid such as water, a heat exchanger pushes the liquid through the heat exchanger to increase temperature of the liquid. The heating mechanism is capable of facilitating phase transition of the liquid from liquid to vapor. The compressor is operable to guide the vapor and the condenser is configured to condense the vapor into liquid or purified liquid.

A Salinity Gradient Solar Pond (SGSP) has saturated salt water in the bottom zone of the pond and nearly fresh water at the top zone, with a gradient zone between the top and bottom. Due to this salinity stratification the upward diffusion of salt is a natural consequence in SGSP's. Controlling the salinity gradient in SGSP systems is vital to their reliable operation. The method for controlling the salinity gradient disclosed in this application, coined the “Pond Rolling Method” by the authors, rapidly drains the pond's non-gradient zones, refurbishes the gradient, and restores the non-gradient zones of the SGSP system, in a manner that minimizes land use, water and heat loss. The salt in the pond is allowed to diffuse upward over time and, on condition as needed to restore the gradient, the Pond Rolling Method is used to completely rebuild the gradient and the SGSP zones.
