Abstract:
Articles of manufacture, including terminations of or attachments to optical fibers are configured to substantially prevent axial emission and redirect radially most if not all light emanating from optical fibers. In that, a termination may include a fiber cap of a unitary construction of a tube and an optical element disposed to face a sealed end of the tube and dividing a hollow of the tube and having a conical surface, or an optical element dividing the hollow and complemented by a cone. An example of termination includes an optical fiber element having an up-tapered end with a maximum taper-diameter exceeding the core-diameter and ending at a conical element with an apex angle from about 70° to about 100°. Articles of manufacture additionally including mounting contraptions cooperating such terminations with cannulae to form an attachment to a laser system. Methods for transmitting light through such articles of manufacture.
Abstract:
This disclosure teaches the use of an endoscopic surgical laser with beam diffraction. During a lithotripsy procedure, an endoscopic probe with a laser fiber is deployed. A diffraction grating within the optical core of the laser fiber disperses the laser energy over a larger area for more effective ablation of renal calculi.
Abstract:
A steerable laser probe may include an actuation structure, a nosecone fixed to the actuation structure by one or more links and one or more link pins, a flexible housing tube, and an optic fiber disposed in the flexible housing tube and the actuation structure. A compression of the actuation structure may be configured to gradually curve the flexible housing tube and the optic fiber. A decompression of the actuation structure may be configured to gradually straighten the flexible housing tube and the optic fiber.
Abstract:
A side-firing laser system with a standoff catheter includes an optical fiber configured to emit therapeutic laser radiation in a direction generally transverse to an axis of the fiber; and a catheter through which the optical fiber is inserted during a surgical procedure. The catheter includes a transparent end section through which the therapeutic laser radiation passes to vaporize tissue outside the catheter, an open distal end to permit exit of irrigation fluid from the catheter, and an opening in a side of the end section, the opening having dimensions that are approximately equal to or less than cross-sectional dimensions of the therapeutic laser radiation. When the fiber is moved to a position at which the therapeutic laser radiation passes through the opening, the laser radiation causes coagulation or vaporization of tissues.
Abstract:
A reusable laser probe with single-use optic fiber may include a reusable handle, an optic fiber fixture, and a single-use optic fiber. The single-use optic fiber may include an optic fiber having an optic fiber distal end and an optic fiber proximal end. The optic fiber may be disposed in a first transitory connector having a first transitory connector distal end and a first transitory connector proximal end wherein the optic fiber distal end extends a fixed distance from the transitory connector distal end. The optic fiber may be disposed in a second transitory connector having a second transitory connector distal end and a second transitory connector proximal end wherein the optic fiber proximal end extends a fixed distance from the second transitory connector distal end. The first transitory connector may be inserted in the reusable handle and the second transitory connector may be inserted in the optic fiber fixture.
Abstract:
A device and methods of use thereof are disclosed herein for a biodegradable optical fiber and a method of producing a device including a biodegradable optical fiber. A device is disclosed that includes: a biodegradable optical fiber including; a biodegradable optically functional inner fiber including an optically-transmitting cladding in contact with and surrounding an optically-transmitting core, wherein the inner fiber is biodegradable on a first time scale; and an outer layer in contact with and surrounding the optically-transmitting cladding, wherein the outer layer is biodegradable on a controllably-defined delayed time scale, and the controllably-defined delayed time scale is of greater duration than the first time scale.
Abstract:
A laser fiber, is modified to have a tip that has a length that is predetermined to ensure that the tip remains viable throughout a given procedure type, despite the presence of burn-back. The extended tip is defined by stripping back the jacket of the laser fiber over the pre-determined length starting at the distal end of the fiber. The stripped portion of the fiber is then dip-coated with a layer of polymeric coating such as an acrylate. A visual indicator can be printed onto the extended tip to aid in the use of the extended fiber. A self-aligning stability sheath is provided to make insertion easier in certain types of endoscopes. The laser fiber with extended tip can be pre-inserted into the sheath and sold as a pre-prepared kit for ease of use and protection of the fiber.
Abstract:
The present invention relates generally to a handpiece laser treatment apparatus for treating an affected area by irradiating lasers thereto. More particularly, the present invention relates to a handpiece laser treatment apparatus capable of adjusting the drawn length of an optical fiber in which laser is irradiated. The handpiece laser treatment apparatus capable of adjusting the length of optical fiber according to the present invention comprises: a laser module for generating a laser; an optical fiber that is connected to the laser module so that the laser is irradiated to the outside; a main body in which the laser module is inserted and disposed in the inside and the optical fiber is projected forwardly; and a slider for adjusting the length of the optical fiber which is projected in front of the body.
Abstract:
Herein is described a side firing optical device for minimal output reflections (scatter) in a one-piece lateral output assembly within which a transmitting optical fiber conduit is disposed providing redirected electromagnetic radiation with operator control of the output beam characteristics. The herein disclosed lateral redirecting device permits ergonomic free rotation of the lateral output beam with positive orientation, provides focus-control of the output beam spot size and/or focus, and provides resposable components, both intraoperatively and interoperatively.
Abstract:
Catheter devices for ablation and removal of occlusions from blood vessels and methods of using the same are provided. Catheter devices are useful to ablate, cut, dislodge, and otherwise remove occlusions within a blood vessel that may limit or prevent proper circulation. Distal features of the catheter devices comprise arrangements of laser ablative or mechanical cutting features that generally provide enhanced surface areas and cutting functions. Spiral or helical arrangements are provided to aid in cutting operations.
