Abstract:
A surgical tool configured to be interchangeably attached to a first controller interface and a second controller interface that is different from the first controller interface is disclosed.
Abstract:
A transecting fastener is operable to cut and secure tissue. The transecting fastener comprises a plurality of legs configured to grip tissue. The transecting fastener further comprises a crown portion and at least one blade. The crown portion joins the plurality of legs and is malleable. The at least one blade is positioned on each of the plurality of legs. The at least one blade is operable to cut tissue. A fastener deploying instrument may be used to deploy the transecting fastener. The fastener deploying instrument may deploy the fasteners in parallel pairs, in an end to end manner.
Abstract:
The present disclosure provides an apparatus, and methods of using same, for collecting blood from an umbilical cord in a sterile environment that includes an umbilical cord retaining assembly and a blood collection assembly rotatably connected to the umbilical cord retaining assembly. A cord cutting blade, which is carried by the blood collection assembly, functions to cut the umbilical cord when the blood collection assembly is rotated relative to the umbilical cord retaining assembly. After the umbilical cord is cut, blood flows by force of gravity into the blood collection region of the blood collection assembly to which a blood collection bag can be interconnected.
Abstract:
A device for clamping and severing a compressible structure includes a clamp assembly and a cutting assembly. The clamp assembly has first second identical clamps coupled together to define a gap therebetween with posts spanning the gap. Each clamp has a pair of arms hingedly coupled to one another at first ends thereof and lockable to one another at second ends thereof. The clamp assembly defines an open position when the second ends of the arms are separated from one another and a clamped position when the second ends of the arms are locked to one another. The cutting assembly supports the clamp assembly in its open position and places the clamp assembly in its clamped position. The cutting assembly includes a convexly-curved cutting blade that passes through the clamp assembly's gap when the clamp assembly is in its closed position to cut through the posts spanning the gap.
Abstract:
A surgical staple-clip including a clip component and a securing member is used in a wide range of surgical procedures. The staple-clip may be introduced to a surgical site in an un-assembled condition through a small port or trocar. An applier for the staple-clip comprising a pair of opposed jaw-like channels is provided to position and apply the clip component and the securing member. The clip component is positioned around a target tissue and is compressed or clamped upon the tissue using only the force required for a specific surgical procedure such as occlusion, ligation or fixation. When the clip component is properly applied, the securing member is urged forward and over the clip component to secure the staple-clip. The clip component may include traction enhancement features such as surface interruptions, bumps, valleys and ridges. With the staple-clip of the invention, the force required to constrict or occlude the tissue is separate from the force required to secure and maintain the staple-clip in position and, as a result, the body tissue is not over-compressed and nourishment to the body tissue is maintained. Other aspects of the invention include thumb actuated clip appliers for use in hand assisted laparoscopy (HAL) In one embodiment, a clip applier includes a handle and a thumb actuated mechanism that is used to slidably release clips onto a body tissue or vessel by sliding the thumb actuated mechanism forward and backward using only one hand. In another aspect of the invention, a two-stage clip is disclosed having a clip component and a staple component for securing the clip after it has been properly positioned.
Abstract:
Process for closing and cutting into sections a flexible tube, with a cutting element and a pinching closing device for cutting into sections with two cross-sections, each with two parts with indentations that can be placed in removable extension by combination elements and that make a passage with an access, whereby the pinching closing device is in the open or closed state where the cross-sections are closed by locking members and where the surfaces form a pinching closing passage of the tube; the pinching region of the tube is positioned in the indentation of a cross-section; the other cross-section is brought opposite the preceding one and the pinching closing device in the closed state, with cooperation of the locking elements, the tube being positively pinched and closed in two positive pinching zones, and thus held in place; the tube is cut into sections between the parts in the closed state, using the cutting element by passing it into the passage without it interfering with the pinching closing device; and the parts are dissociated.

Abstract:
A device for excising tissue and closing a wound that results from excision of the tissue includes structure defining an aperture into which tissue to be excised is exposed. The device also includes a cutting member for excising the tissue, a closure member for closing the wound, and an actuatable drive member associated with the structure. The drive member is actuatable to move the cutting member relative to the aperture for excising the tissue that is exposed in the aperture and for closing the wound with the closure member.
Abstract:
A surgical device for ligating and severing a vessel. The surgical device including: a housing; a flexible suture having a looped portion extending from a distal end of the housing for capturing a periphery of the vessel; ligating means for tightening the looped portion around the periphery of the vessel; and a cutter for cutting the vessel. Also provided is a method for ligating and severing a vessel including: looping a flexible suture material around a periphery of the vessel; looping a flexible cutting material around the periphery of the vessel; ligating the vessel by decreasing the size of the loop of flexible suture material; and severing the vessel by decreasing the size of the loop of flexible cutting material. The method preferably further includes drawing the vessel against a cutting surface, such as a knife blade, which is retractable in a housing.
Abstract:
An endoscopic vessel harvesting device and a method of endoscopic harvesting of vessels from a patients body. The method comprises locating the vessel, and inserting the vessel harvesting device through an incision. Dissecting the vessel from the surrounding tissue, and capturing side branch vessels in a vessel capturing device. Ligating and transecting the side branch vessels using electrodes and a knife located in the vessel capturing device. Finally, ligating and transecting the vessel, and removing the vessel from the patients body. The vessel harvesting device comprises a head piece, a shaft having a lumen for receiving an endoscope, and a vessel capturing device located on the head piece for capturing the side branch vessels in the receiver.
