Abstract:
A method of surgery includes grasping tissue between tissue-treating plates of first and second jaw members. One or both of the jaw members includes a bifurcated body having first and second jaw components. Each jaw component includes a tissue-treating plate portion disposed thereon. The tissue-treating plate portions cooperate to define the tissue-treating plate of the jaw member. The method further includes energizing the tissue-treating plates of the first and second jaw members for conducting energy through grasped tissue to treat grasped tissue and separating grasped and treated tissue by rotating at least one of the first and second jaw components of the at least one jaw member relative to the other from an aligned orientation, wherein the tissue-treating plate portions are substantially co-planar relative to one another, to an angled orientation, wherein the tissue-treating plate portions are angled relative to one another.
Abstract:
A method of surgery includes grasping tissue between tissue-treating plates of first and second jaw members by moving the first and second jaw members from a spaced-apart position to a first approximated position, energizing the tissue-treating plates to conduct energy through the grasped tissue to treat tissue, and separating grasped and treated tissue by moving the first and second jaw members from the first approximated position to a second approximated position. Moving the first and second jaw members from the first approximated position to the second approximated position laterally shifts the jaw members relative to one another from an aligned orientation, wherein the tissue-treating plates are aligned with one another, to an offset orientation, wherein the tissue-treating plates are offset relative to one another.
Abstract:
A surgical instrument includes a housing, a shaft extending therefrom and supporting an end effector, a knife, and a trigger assembly. The knife is configured to translate between retracted and extended positions. The trigger assembly includes a trigger movable relative to the housing between un-actuated and actuated positions, and a linkage including an apex and first and second bases. The apex is rotatably coupled to the housing about a pivot. The first base is disposed on a first side of the apex and coupled to the trigger. The second base is disposed on a second side of the apex and coupled to the knife. In response to movement of the trigger from the un-actuated to the actuated position, the first base is moved proximally, the apex is rotated about the pivot, and the second base is moved distally to move the knife from the retracted to the extended position.
Abstract:
A locking tonsil forceps having first and second intersecting and pivoting arm members, and grasping members disposed on the arm members. The grasping members have blunt tine members, a concave interior surface, inwardly facing blunt interior projection members, flush lateral projection members and angled lateral projection members. The tine members and projecting members are non-contacting with each other even in the maximum closed forceps position.
Abstract:
A surgical instrument includes a housing, a shaft extending from the housing, and end effector, a drive plate, and a knife member. The shaft defines a rectangular configuration. The end effector includes first and second jaw members coupled to one another via a pivot pin extending between long sides of the shaft and movable about the pivot pin between spaced-apart and approximated positions. The drive plate is configured such that translation of the drive plate through the shaft and relative to the end effector assembly pivots the jaw members. The drive plate defines surfaces that are parallel to the long sides of the shaft. The knife member is configured to translate through the shaft and relative to the end effector assembly between retracted and extended positions. The knife member defines surfaces that are parallel to the surfaces of the drive plate and the long sides of the shaft.
Abstract:
An end effector assembly for a surgical instrument includes first and second jaw members, each including a jaw frame, spacer, electrically-conductive plate, and outer housing. The jaw frame includes at least one proximal flange and a distal jaw support extending distally therefrom. The spacer defines a body and a wing disposed on either side of the body. The body defines a channel configured to receive the distal jaw support while each wing defines a slot. The plate defines a tissue-contacting portion and first and second legs extending perpendicularly from the tissue-contacting portion. The tissue-contacting portion is configured to sit atop the body of the spacer. Each of the legs is configured for receipt within the slot defined within one of the wings. The outer housing at least partially surrounds the distal jaw support, spacer, and legs and is configured to retain these components in position relative to one another.
Abstract:
An article comprising: (a) a battery support containing battery lead wires, (b) an opposing battery support attached to the battery support to create a battery closure, and (c) one or more batteries; wherein the batteries are secured in the battery closure, wherein the batteries are secured to the opposing battery support, the batteries supply energy to a device, and removing the opposing battery support from the battery closure disables transmission of electricity from the batteries via the battery lead wires to the device.
Abstract:
Described here are devices and methods for treating one or more conditions or symptoms associated with a tonsil procedure. In some variations, a drug-releasing device may be at least partially delivered to one or more tonsillar tissues before, during, or after a tonsil procedure. In some variations, the drug-releasing device may be configured to be biodegradable. In other variations, the drug-releasing device may comprise one or more hemostatic materials or one or more adhesives. The drug-releasing device may be configured to release one or more drugs or agents, such as, for example, one or more analgesics, local anesthetics, vasoconstrictors, antibiotics, combinations thereof and the like.

Abstract:
A straightening tool is disclosed for straightening angled tissue cutting instruments including an outer member having a proximal length portion and a pre-formed bend connecting the proximal length portion with a distal length portion extending from the bend at an angle to a distal end, and a flexible inner member movably disposed in the outer member to cut anatomical tissue. The straightening tool comprises a handle and a positioning block extending from the handle coaxial with the straightening tool. The positioning block has a longitudinal bore for receiving the distal length portion therethrough to position the distal end within a cavity of the positioning block and the bend within a longitudinal slot of the positioning block with the proximal length portion extending externally through an opening of the slot. The bore confines the distal length portion against radial movement and serves as a fulcrum about which the proximal length portion is manually pivotable into abutment with a floor of the slot extending from the bore at an angle in a direction opposite the slot opening. Upon release of the manual pivoting force, the proximal length portion springs back somewhat in the direction of the original bend to obtain a longitudinally straightened outer member. The straightened outer member is used with the inner member to cut anatomical tissue as a straightened tissue cutting instrument.
