摘要: Electrolyte solutions for flow batteries and other electrochemical systems can contain an active material that is capable of transferring one or more electrons per molecule during an oxidation-reduction cycle. Doubly bridged aromatic groups or their coordination compounds can be particularly suitable active materials. Flow batteries can include a first half-cell containing a first electrolyte solution, and a second half-cell containing a second electrolyte solution, in which at least one of the first electrolyte solution and the second electrolyte solution contains an active material having at least two aromatic groups doubly bridged by a carbonyl moiety and a bridging moiety containing a bridging atom selected from carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur, selenium and tellurium. Such bridged compounds can directly function as the active material, or coordination compounds containing the bridged compounds as at least one ligand can serve as the active material.

摘要: The present invention relates to methods and apparatuses for determining the ratio of oxidized and reduced forms of a redox couple in solution, each method comprising: contacting first and second stationary working electrodes and first and second counter electrode to the solution; applying a first potential at the first stationary working electrode and a second potential at the second stationary working electrode relative to the respective counter electrodes and measuring first and second constant currents for the first and second stationary working electrodes, respectively; wherein the first and second constant currents have opposite signs and the ratio of the absolute values of the first and second constant currents reflects the ratio of the oxidized and reduced forms of the redox couple in solution. When used in the context of monitoring/controlling electrochemical cells, additional embodiments include those further comprising oxidizing or reducing the solution.

摘要: The present disclosure is directed, in certain embodiments, to a flow cell battery system. A battery management system detects that a first power module and a second power module located adjacent to the first power module are operating at different states of charge. After determining that the second power module is at the lower state of charge than the first power module, a negative-side switch associated with the second power module is adjusted to an open position, thereby preventing flow of electrical current from a negative terminal of the second power module to electrical ground.

Particular nitroxide compounds can include a doubly bonded oxygen contained in a ring bearing the nitroxide group, a doubly bonded oxygen appended to a ring bearing the nitroxide group, sulfate or phosphate groups appended to a ring bearing the nitroxide group, various heterocyclic rings bearing the nitroxide group, or acyclic nitroxide compounds.

摘要: Solids can sometimes form in one or more electrolyte solutions during operation of flow batteries and related electrochemical systems. Over time, the solids can accumulate and compromise the integrity of flow pathways and other various flow battery components. Flow batteries configured for mitigating solids therein can include an autonomous solids separator, such as a lamella clarifier. Such flow batteries can include a first half-cell containing a first electrolyte solution, a second half-cell containing a second electrolyte solution, a first flow loop configured to circulate the first electrolyte solution through the first half-cell, a second flow loop configured to circulate the second electrolyte solution through the second half-cell, and at least one lamella clarifier in fluid communication with at least one of the first half-cell and the second half-cell. A hydrocyclone can be used as an alternative to a lamella clarifier in some instances.
