The present invention aims to provide a fluororesin-aluminum oxide mixed dispersion wherein both fluororesin particle and aluminum oxide particle uniformly float and disperse in an aqueous solvent. The fluororesin-aluminum oxide mixed dispersion is obtained by mixing aqueous dispersion of fluororesin particle and aluminum oxide particle sol, wherein both the fluororesin particle and the aluminum oxide particle float and disperse, and wherein the dispersion state is stably maintained for three days or more. A solid product obtained by evaporation and scattering of the solvent from the above-described fluororesin-aluminum oxide mixed dispersion has a heat resistance of not less than 330° C.

A novel and effective method for the synthetic preparation of dialkylchlorosilanes as an important intermediate in the silicone industry is provided, which is based on the selectivity of a specific combination of a reaction solvent and a reducing agent in the dechlorination-reduction of one of the two silicon-bonded chlorine atoms present in a dialkyldichlorosilane to convert the Si-Cl linkages to Si-H. The reaction solvent used is either N,N'-dimethylimidazolidinone or N,N,N',N',N",N"-hexamethyl-phosphoric triamide, while the reducing agent is sodium borohydride, optionally in combination with sodium hydride.

A modified nickel catalyst used for stereo-differentiating reduction of carbonyl compounds is provided. The modified nickel catalyst is prepared by soaking a nickel catalyst in an aqueous modifying medium having dissolved therein at least one inorganic salt, such as sodium bromide or sodium chloride, and at least one optically active substance, such as optically active hydroxy acid. The modified nickel catalyst exhibits enhanced activity for stereo-differentiating reduction and causes little or no side reactions, and thus, brings about an extremely high yield of the reaction product.

The present invention provides a porous alumina self-supporting film which has a sufficient strength to be used as a self-supporting film, is flexible and has a high transparency; an alumina sol that is composed of fibrous or needle-like boehmite particles dispersed in a solution and that has a high storage stability; and methods for producing such a film and such an alumina sol. More specifically, the invention provides a porous alumina self-supporting film which is composed of a collection of fibrous or needle-like alumina hydrate particles or alumina particles having an average breadth of 1 to 10 nm, an average aspect ratio (length/breadth) of 30 to 5,000 and an average length of 100 to 10,000 nm, has an orientation, has a pore distribution with a pore diameter dpeak of 0.5 to 20 nm, is flexible, has a high transparency, and has the ability to luminesce when excited by ultraviolet light; an alumina sol which has a Na, K and SO4 content of 0 to 1 ppm, has an orientation when the particles are collected, and luminesces when excited by ultraviolet light after being fired at 250 to 900° C.; and methods for producing such a film and such an alumina sol.

A 5-bromo-1-pentanal compound of the formula (I): ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 respectively represent, independently from each other, a member selected from the group consisting of a hydrogen atom and alkyl radicals having 1 to 7 carbon atoms, or an acetal derivative of said 5-bromo-1-pentanal compound, is produced by subjecting a starting compound selected from the group consisting of 4-pentenal compounds of the formula (II): ##STR2## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are as defined above, and acetal derivatives of the above-mentioned compounds, to a free radical addition reaction with hydrogen bromide in a liquid medium at a temperature of 10.degree. C. to 60.degree. C.; in the presence of a free radical initiator or by irradiating ultraviolet rays to the reaction mixture, and by collecting the resultant reaction product from the reaction mixture.
