Abstract: A method of fabricating a thermal management device. The method includes depositing a seed layer, using a seed layer depositing technique, on a side of a support base; growing a heat sink base layer on a side of the seed layer; depositing a hard mask on a side of the support base directly opposite that containing the seed and heat sink base layers; patterning the hard mask with a photoresist mask; etching the patterned hard mask with an etching technique, wherein the etching creates trenches in the underlying support base, exposing the seed layer; removing the hard mask with a hard mask removal technique; depositing a layer of photoresist on the heat sink base layer; growing heat sinks using a heat sink growth technique on the exposed seed layer; removing the photoresist layer with a photoresist layer removal technique; and removing the support base with a support base removal technique.

Abstract: Various examples are related to parking management, including identifying and reserving empty parking spaces. In one example, a smart parking space system includes a parking controller located at a parking space. The parking controller can identify a vehicle located at the parking space via an input sensor or a transceiver that initiates wireless communication with an electronic tag associated with the vehicle; and communicate a parking vacancy associated with the parking space to a remote computing device based at least in part on the identification of the vehicle. In another example, a computing device can receive parking vacancy data associated with a parking space from a parking controller; determine a parking vacancy associated with the parking space using the parking vacancy data; and encode for display on a client device a network page that includes an indication of the parking vacancy associated with the parking space.

Abstract: A mechanical resonator-based cascadable logic device includes which includes a resonator having a beam with a first fixed end, a second fixed end, and a length between the first and second fixed ends. A first electrode and a second electrode are aligned along a first side of the beam. A third electrode and a fourth electrode are aligned along a second side of the beam and opposite the first and second electrodes. A DC voltage source is coupled to one of the first and second fixed ends of the beam. At least one of the first, second, third, and fourth electrodes is coupled to a first AC voltage source so that a logic operation is performed by activating a second resonant mode of the resonator.

Abstract: Sensors and active switches for applications in gas detection and other fields are described. The devices are based on the softening and hardening nonlinear response behaviors of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) clamped-clamped microbeams. In that context, embodiments of gas-triggered MEMS microbeam sensors and switches are described. The microbeam devices can be coated with a Metal-Organic Framework to achieve high sensitivity. For gas sensing, an amplitude-based tracking algorithm can be used to quantify an amount of gas captured by the devices according to frequency shift. Noise analysis is also conducted according to the embodiments, which shows that the microbeam devices have high stability against thermal noise. The microbeam devices are also suitable for the generation of binary sensing information for alarming, for example.

Abstract: Methods of fabricating devices vial selective laser etching are provided. The methods can include selective laser etching of a portion of a metal layer, e.g. using a laser light source having a wavelength of 1,000 nm to 1,500 nm. The methods can be used to fabricate a variety of features, including an electrode, an interconnect, a channel, a reservoir, a contact hole, a trench, a pad, or a combination thereof. A variety of devices fabricated according to the methods are also provided. In some aspects, capacitive humidity sensors are provided that can be fabricated according to the provided methods. The capacitive humidity sensors can be fabricated with intricate electrodes, e.g. having a fractal pattern such as a Peano curve, a Hilbert curve, a Moore curve, or a combination thereof.

The processor can be configured to calculate estimated vehicle speed and/or estimated vehicle attitude. The wireless transmitter can be configured to wirelessly transmit estimated vehicle speed and/or estimated vehicle attitude. The apparatus, system, and method can be integrated with a wireless sensor network.

Abstract: A method for manufacturing a soft stamp includes providing a substrate having a first electrode and a second electrode, the second electrode being formed at a distance less than 100 nm from the first electrode so that a nanogap Ng is formed between the first and second electrodes; pouring a curable substance over the first and second electrodes and into the nanogap Ng; curing the curable substance to form a soft stamp; and removing the soft stamp from the first and second electrodes. The soft stamp has a nano-feature having a size less than 100 nm.

The first solvent is selected to evaporate before the second solvent.
