摘要: Detachable optical connectors for optical chips and methods of their fabrication are disclosed. In one embodiment, an optical connector includes a ferrule that supports ferrule waveguides. The optical connector further includes a waveguide support coupled to the ferrule and that supports transition waveguides that are optically coupled to the ferrule waveguides. Ends of the ferrule waveguides are exposed at one end of the ferrule to define a first pitch while ends of the second waveguides are exposed at a chip coupling surface of the waveguide support. The transition waveguides provide at least one type of transition for the guided light traveling within the ferrule waveguides to enable either edge coupling, surface coupling or evanescent coupling to chip waveguides of an optical chip. The transition can include a change in mode-field diameter, direction of the guided light, and/or pitch.

摘要: A fiber array unit (FAU) includes a substrate, a cover element, and a plurality of optical fibers each including a splice joint connecting fibers of different mode-field diameters with a recoating material arranged over at least a portion of the fibers overlapping the substrate, wherein stripped portions of the fibers are arranged in grooves between the substrate and the cover element. A method for fabricating a compact FAU includes splicing ends of stripped sections of first and second optical fiber segments of different mode-field diameters, applying a recoating material over at least portions of the stripped sections, positioning portions of stripped sections of the second optical fiber segments in grooves defined in a substrate, and arranging a cover over the grooves. Certain embodiments include stripping recoating material portions of the second optical fiber segments before they are placed in the grooves.

摘要: Disclosed herein is a routing band-pass filter for routing optical signals between multiple optical channel sets. In particular, disclosed is a wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) optical assembly including a first WDM filter, a second WDM filter, and a first routing filter. The first and second WDM filter are in communication with first and second sets of channel ports, respectively. The routing filter has a routing passband and forms a primary routing optical path for signals outside the routing passband between the first WDM filter and a common port. The routing filter also forms a secondary routing optical path for signals within the routing passband between the second WDM filter and the common port. The routing band-pass filter increases the number of channel ports in optical communication with a common port while maintaining signal integrity and increasing speed.

摘要: An upgradeable distribution framework, cable connector and cabling management system is described. The distribution framework has a plurality of ports adapted to be connected by cable connectors and indicator elements arranged on the distribution framework wherein corresponding to at least a portion of the ports. A plurality of first communication units are detachably secured to the cable connectors and such that the first communication units are positioned outside the ports when the cable connectors are inserted into the ports. The distribution framework further includes a plurality of second communication units that correspond to at least a portion of the ports. The second communication units and the corresponding first communication units are configured to communicate with each other in a non-contact manner. A control modules is configured to control and read and write communications between at least a portion of the first communication units and the second communication units.

摘要: A multiplexer/demultiplexer is provided comprising a capillary filter block, a capillary adhesive, a signal-routing block, and an index-matching adhesive. The capillary adhesive resides in the capillary interstices of the capillary filter block and the index-matching adhesive forms an optical and mechanical interface between the signal-routing block and the capillary filter block. The layer thickness of the index-matching adhesive accommodates for extra-planar surface irregularities in the bonding face of the signal routing block and extra-planar variations along the proximal ends of the component filter blocks of the capillary filter block. The capillary filter block can be formed from a plurality of component filter blocks by dicing multiple component filter blocks from a filter block substrate, placing the component filter blocks adjacent to one another, and using capillary force to draw adhesive between adjacent sidewalls of component filter blocks.

摘要: An optical sub-assembly includes an optical adapter with a main body that defines an internal chamber disposed between a front side and a rear side. The internal chamber includes a rear internal chamber with a sleeve section and a rear body section. A connector is disposed within the rear internal chamber. The connector includes a ferrule, a ferrule holder and a rear body. A sleeve holding the ferrule and an optical fiber extending into the ferrule are included. The ferrule extends from the ferrule holder and the sleeve is disposed over the ferrule with an interference fit such that the ferrule, ferrule holder and sleeve form an integrated part. The sleeve is disposed in the sleeve section of the rear internal chamber of the main body with an interference fit such that the ferrule, ferrule holder, sleeve and rear body position and align the optical fiber within the optical adapter.
