摘要: In an optical anisotropy measurement apparatus for emitting a light flux from a He-Ne laser to be incident to an object to be examined, such as a liquid crystal in a liquid crystal cell, and detecting a light flux totally reflected from the object to be examined to measure an optical anisotropy of the object, a portion of the incident light flux is designed to be incident at an angle smaller than a critical angle of total reflection to and transmitted through the object to be examined. As a result, a light flux-incident region causing total reflection at the boundary is allowed to have a shape closer to a circle and have a smaller size, thus allowing detection of a local alignment change in optical anisotropy as caused by, e.g., a minute alignment defect in a liquid crystal device. Further by detecting the transmitted portion of the incident light flux, an optical anisotropy of the object to be examined at a position other than a boundary thereof can be measured simultaneously.

摘要: An optical anisotropy measurement apparatus including a light source emitting a light beam and a photodetector disposed opposite to the light source is provided for measuring an optical anisotropy of an object to be examined disposed between the light source and the photodetector so as to intersect a straight line connecting the light source and the photodetector. The apparatus further includes: a supporting member for supporting the object to be examined rotatably about a rotation axis extending perpendicular to the straight line, a polarizer positioned between the light source and the object to be examined, an analyzer positioned between the object to be examined and the photodetector, and an optical member disposed between the light source and the object to be examined so as to cause the beam to pass through an intersection of the straight line and the rotation axis. The optical member is preferably a pair of transparent members each having a curved surface and a flat surface disposed to sandwich the object to be examined with their opposing flat surfaces. The object to be examined may be a liquid crystal cell.

摘要: An optical characteristic measuring apparatus capable of making a measurement area smaller and facilitating the precise checking of the position of the measurement area includes a filter having a small hole disposed between a semispherical glass and a photodetector, so that a light beam reflected at a specific interface is detected with the photodetector and a light beam reflected at an interface different from the specific interface is not detected with the photodetector. By this arrangement, measurement precision by the photodetector can be maintained. Moreover, since a conventional upper semispherical glass is not placed on a liquid crystal device, the position of a measurement area can be precisely checked easily with a microscope.

摘要: An apparatus for measuring an optical anisotropy of an object to be examined, such as a liquid crystal, based on an interaction of an evanescent wave occurring during total reflection of a beam with the object is disclosed. The apparatus includes a transparent member having a curved surface and a flat surface for mounting an object to be examined thereon; a light source disposed opposite to a first region of the curved surface of the transparent member so as to emit a beam incident through the first region and the transparent member to an outer surface of the object; a polarizer disposed on the emission side of the light source; an incident optical system disposed between the light source and the first region of the curved surface; a photodetector disposed opposite to a second region of the curved surface of the transparent member so as to detect a beam emitted from the light source, totally reflected at a proximity of the outer surface of the object and incident thereto through the second region; and an analyzer disposed between the photodetector and the second region of the curved surface. The object to be examined may be mounted movably on the flat surface of the transparent member via a liquid having a refractive index almost equal to that of the transparent member.

摘要: A computerized method of compressing symbolic information organized into a plurality of documents, each document having a plurality of symbols, includes: (i) automatically identifying a plurality of sequential and non-sequential symbol pairs in an input document; (ii) counting the number of appearances of each unique symbol pair; and (iii) producing a compressed document that includes a replacement symbol at each position associated with one of the plurality of symbol pairs, at least one of which corresponds to a non-sequential symbol pair. For each non-sequential pair the compressed document includes corresponding indicia indicating a distance between locations of the non-sequential symbols of the pair in the input document. In some instances the plurality of symbol pairs includes only those pairs of non-sequential symbols for which the distance between locations of the non-sequential symbols of the pair in the input document is less than a numeric distance cap.

摘要: A computerized method and apparatus compresses symbolic information, such as text. Symbolic information is compressed by recursively identifying pairs of symbols (e.g., pairs of words or characters) and replacing each pair with a respective replacement symbol. The number of times each symbol pair appears in the uncompressed text is counted, and pairs are only replaced if they appear more than a threshold number of times. In recursive passes, each replaced pair can include a previously substituted replacement symbol. The method and apparatus can achieve high compression especially for large datasets. Metadata, such as the number of times each pair appears, generated during compression of the documents can be used to analyze the documents and find similarities between two documents.

摘要: A location support relating to a mobile station that can make use of multiple communication networks more efficiently. In an SUPL server of a location system, a judgment is made as to which of two communication networks is accessed by a mobile station based on information specifying the access point of the mobile station, with this access point being notified from the mobile station, whereby the information is then notified from the SUPL server to a location information management device. As a result, in the location information management device, requests to a communication network, which is not accessed by the mobile station, for location information for use in location of the mobile station are suppressed. This makes it possible for location support relating to a mobile station capable of using multiple communication networks to be carried out more efficiently.
