Abstract:
An edge coding scheme for an encoded sheet material includes an offset mark located at an offset distance from a reference mark on the edge of the sheet material and a plurality of equally spaced clock marks disposed along the edge, such that the offset distance can be approximated by the product of the number of clock marks between the reference mark and the offset mark times the distance between successive clock marks. Another embodiment of the edge coding scheme includes coincidence between a first plurality of equally spaced apart clock marks and a second plurality of equally spaced Vernier marks, wherein the second plurality is less than the first plurality.
Abstract:
The system comprises an improved document monitoring agent in which user evaluations are used to decide whether a changed document should be saved in the system or not. The evaluation of importance of the change in a document is performed by one or more users who collaboratively monitor a networked document, typically identified by a URL. By providing a user evaluation interface, it is possible for users to indicate their evaluation of the significance of the change. As such, only significantly changed documents, as indicated by the users themselves, are saved. Thus, a more efficient saving is obtained while at the same time reducing the risk of discarding potentially interesting changed documents which would have been discarded by conventional monitoring agents.
Abstract:
An interactive document processing system includes a display screen that is coupled to a processing device. In addition, the document processing system includes an input device for viewing all or a portion of a hardcopy document on a work surface. The input device generates signals representing the appearance of the hardcopy document from representative electronic data stored in a print memory. In one embodiment, the processing device is connected to the input device to receive the signals, determine the position of a moving indicator relative to the document, and correlate the determined position with the electronic representation of the hardcopy document. The display screen provides information related to user commands that edit and/or select portions of the electronic representation of the hardcopy document.
Abstract:
A knowledge management system according to the invention uses print cover sheets to connect users to knowledge relevant both to the user and the communities to which they belong by making use of the declaration of relevance implicit in the print process. The cover sheet becomes an input, output and surrogate document mechanism enabling access to both document repositories and associated knowledge management services, such as for example, document related services and a recommender service.
Abstract:
An encoded sheet material includes a sheet of material having a first surface, a second surface disposed opposite the first surface and an edge extending between the first surface and the second surface and peripherally about the sheet of material, the edge having indicia arranged thereon to form a code uniquely identifying the sheet of material. A system for managing an encoded sheet of material, includes a code reader operative in conjunction with the encoded sheet of material for reading the code, a sheet processing apparatus for reading information from and/or writing information to at least one of the first and second surfaces, and a processor in communication with the code reader device and the sheet processing apparatus for associating the information with the read code.
Abstract:
A method of creating an authenticatable sheet of material, includes measuring at least one physical property of the sheet of material; marking an edge of the sheet of material with indicia arranged to form a unique code identifying the sheet of material, wherein the sheet of material includes a first surface, a second surface disposed opposite the first surface and an edge extending between the first surface and the second surface and peripherally about the sheet of material; and recording the measured physical property in a measure database indexed by the edge code. To verify the validity of a sheet of material, the edge code is read, the same physical property is measured and the measured value is compared with the previously stored value extracted from the measure database. If the two are substantially equal, the sheet of material is authentic.
Abstract:
A system for providing item recommendations includes a memory, a device, responsive to a user request, for recording an item on a hardcopy medium, and a processor, for storing ratings of items and for generating recommendations for new items based on recommendation criteria. In response to the user request, the processor stores an implicit rating for the requested item in the memory, determines whether, based on the implicit rating and the recommendation criteria, to generate an item recommendation, and if the criteria for generating a recommendation is met, generates a recommendation of a new item. The recommender system may further store a representation of the recorded item in the memory. Recommendations may be based on item to item similarities, item to user similarities or user to user similarities.
Abstract:
A web-based shared document repository includes recommender system functions to allow users of the repository to input reviews of documents contained in the repository and to read inputted reviews. The recommender system functions appear as a seamless integration in the document repository by loosely coupling the shared document repository to a web-based recommender system.
