Abstract: A portable lighting device for providing illumination includes a body dimensioned and sized to the held by one hand, and adapted to contain a power source therein. A head on the body has a recess in which a light source in the recess is electrically as connected to the power source. The recess and the light source are configured to generate a unidirectional light pattern. A switch enables the light source to be selectively energized by the power source, and a volumetric optical unit is configured for attachment to the head over the recess and the light source to generate an isotropic light pattern.

Abstract: An illuminator includes a body configured to be interconnected to a source of power and having a light source carried thereon. A scattering device associated with the body and in register with the light source includes a light coupler configured for placement adjacent to the light source. The light coupler includes a first region proximal the at least one light source and a second region abutting the first region and defining a boundary therebetween. Light emitted from the light source is scattered as a result of travelling through the first region and the second region.

The light coupler includes a first region proximal the light source where the first region has a first index of refraction and a second region abutting the first region to define a boundary therebetween. Being distal to the light source, the second region has a second index of refraction that is greater than the first index of refraction. Light emitted from the light source is scattered as a result of travelling through the first region and the second region.
