摘要: The present invention relates to various digital watermarking methods, apparatus and systems. One claim recites a method of determining a size or denomination of a momentary object. The method includes: utilizing a configured, multi-purpose electronic processor, decoding a digital watermark embedded in a monetary object, the watermark including data corresponding to a denomination of the monetary object; based on the data, determining feedback to indicate the denomination of the monetary object; and providing the feedback. Handheld computing devices can be advantageously employed with this combination. Of course, other combinations are provided and claimed.

摘要: The present invention relates generally to image or video display devices. For example, there are many devices (e.g., cell phones, video games, calculators, positioning systems and personal computing devices) that include such display devices. One claim recites a device including: an image or video display including a first set of elements and a second set of elements, the first set of elements being varied relative to at least the second set of elements, the first set of elements being arranged to provide a plural-bit device identifier obtainable from optical scan data representing at least a portion of the image or video display, the first set of elements and the second set of elements being arranged so as to conceal the presence of the plural-bit device identifier from a human observer of the display. Of course, other claims and combinations are provided as well.

摘要: The present invention relates to various steganographic methods and apparatus. In one embodiment, a plurality of microlenses can provide a steganographic signal for a handheld device. The pattern corresponds to (or conveys) a device identifier. In another embodiment, a handheld computing device includes: a plurality of pixel elements; a set of microlenses; and electronic circuitry communicating with the set of microlenses. The set of microlenses are arranged to create a pattern, the pattern providing a plural-bit identifier. The electronic circuitry operates to change the unique identifier. Other embodiments are also provided.

The watermark is not conspicuous to a human observer of the media, yet conveys plural bits of auxiliary information when optically scanned and digitally processed. The watermark can be formed by ink-jet printing, or otherwise. The encoded information can be used for various purposes, including authenticating the document as an original, linking to associated on-line resources, and distinguishing seemingly-identical versions of the same document (document serialization).

摘要: The present disclosure relates generally to identification documents and related methods and apparatus. One claim recites a method to determine whether to authenticate an identification document through digital watermarking or through an alternative process. The method includes: receiving data carried by the identification document corresponding to a detection trigger; if the received data indicates an expected presence of digital watermarks, attempting to authenticate the identification document by analyzing digital watermarking carried by the identification document; and if the received data indicates an expected absence of digital watermarks, attempting to authenticate the identification document through an alternative process. Other claims and combinations are provided too.
