Abstract: A data processing apparatus includes circuitry configured to: store information indicative of a general difficulty rating associated with each of one or more general gaming characteristics applicable to a plurality of video games; provide access to the stored information to an application of a first video game to enable a specific difficulty rating associated with a specific gaming characteristic applicable to the first video game to be determined based on each general difficulty rating; and provide access to the stored information to an application of a second video game to enable a specific difficulty rating associated with a specific gaming characteristic applicable to the second video game to be determined based on each general difficulty rating.
