    Abstract: A subsurface impact protection system for protecting an underground asset is provided. The protection system includes a subsurface polymer layer provided above the asset to prevent impact forces from reaching the asset. A sensor network is embedded in the polymer layer. The sensor network comprises optical fibers each including one or more fiber optic sensors. The optical fibers receive an input signal from a source and transmit it through the fiber. At the output end of the fiber is an optical detector that measures light properties of the output optical signal indicative of environmental conditions near the polymer layer. The sensor network transmits a signal including measured light or environmental parameters to a monitoring computing system. In some embodiments, the polymer layer includes a protective mesh made up of a plurality of high density polyethylene strands in a woven pattern. A method of protecting an underground asset is also provided.

    Abstract: Systems and methods include a fluorescence measurement apparatus. A single-wavelength light source generates an excitation light source. A sample holder holds a sample and includes a surface transparent to the excitation light source. Mounts attached to the single-wavelength light source(s) or the sample holder change an incident angle of the excitation light source on the surface. Optical components positioned in a path of a fluorescence emission emitted from the surface guide the fluorescence emission to a detector that obtains spectra from at least first and second angles-of-incidence. A device records spectra obtained by the detector from the first and second angles-of-incidence, normalizes and analyzes intensities of the spectra, subtracts a first spectrum corresponding to the first angle-of-incidence from a second spectrum corresponding to the second angle-of-incidence to obtain a difference, identifying a sample type of the sample based on an API gravity mapped to the difference.

    Abstract: A pallet tracking system for tracking a plurality of uniquely identified pallets is provided. The pallet tracking system includes a non-transitory storage device and a tracking circuit. The non-transitory storage device is configured to maintain a pallet database of data concerning the pallets. The data concerning each pallet is accessible by the unique identifier of the pallet and includes a material composition of the pallet. The tracking circuit is configured to receive the unique identifier of one of the pallets from the one of the pallets using a scanning device, retrieve the material composition of the one of the pallets from the pallet database using the received unique identifier, and return the retrieved material composition in response to a request. A pallet sharing system for sharing the pallets with a plurality of custodians using this pallet tracking system is also provided.

    Abstract: A system and method is disclosed for calibrating the volume of storage containers using ultrasonic inspection techniques. The exemplary ultrasonic calibration system comprises a plurality of acoustic devices controllably deployed in respective positions on the outside surface of the container. The acoustic devices include a transducer for sending acoustic signals across the internal volume of the container and sensors configured to detect the acoustic signals. The acoustic devices are in communication with a diagnostic computing device that controls the positioning and the operation of the acoustic devices and is further configured to determine the time time-of-flight of acoustic signals that travel between the various acoustic devices. Moreover, according to the specific arrangement of acoustic devices and the measured acoustic signal information, the control computer is configured to calculate the dimensions of the container and its internal volume.

    Abstract: A technological solution for analyzing a sequence of electromagnetic spectrum image frames of a nonmetallic asset and detecting or predicting an aberration in the asset, including a detected or predicted location of the aberration.     Abstract: A subsurface impact protection system for protecting an underground structure is provided. The protection system includes a subsurface polymer layer above the underground structure which is configured to absorb above-ground impact force from reaching the underground structure. A sensor network is embedded in the polymer layer. The sensor network includes a plurality of sensors configured to monitor the polymer layer by generating a corresponding plurality of sensor signals of conditions near the polymer layer and transmitting the generated sensor signals to one or more external receivers. In some embodiments, the polymer layer includes a protective mesh made up of a plurality of high density polyethylene (HDPE) strands in a woven pattern. In one such embodiment, the sensors occupy gaps in the protective mesh. A method of protecting an underground structure is also provided.
