Lubricants and processing aids for synthetic fibers, particularly polyester and nylon fibers, are disclosed comprising compounds having the structural formulas: ##STR1## in which R is an aliphatic group generally having about 3 to about 22 carbon atoms; A is a mixture of residues from ethylene oxide and at least one other lower alkylene oxide, preferably a heteric mixture of oxyethylene and oxypropylene residues in the respective ratio by weight of 20:80 to 90:10; and n has a value to produce a molecular weight of about 300 to about 3000.Where liquid products are desired which contain the higher numbered carbon chain residues, low viscosity compounds can be obtained by oxyalkylating a glycerol-1,3-dialkylether with a mixture of ethylene oxide and 1,2-propylene oxide in the respective ratio as set forth above. Thus it is possible by properly balancing the carbon chain length of the R groups in the lubricant compounds of the invention with the oxyalkylene chain length to obtain products varying between water insoluble and water soluble. The oxyalkylated fiber lubricants of the invention have the properties of viscous liquids, solids or pastes at ambient temperature.

The present invention provides new linear phosphorus- and halogen-containing flame retardant polyester additives for normally flammable polymers and coatings for normally flammable natural and synthetic films and fibers, for instance, polyester and cellulose ester films and fibers. The phosphorus- and halogen-containing polymers of the invention are water dispersible or can be rendered water-soluble. They can be prepared by reacting a phosphorus acid reactant such as phosphoric acid with at least one halogenated difunctional monomer. The water-soluble polyesters can be cross-linked to render them insoluble in water by heating together with a methylol compound.Said halogenated monomer is preferably an oxyalkylated diacid or diol and said halogen is attached either on one or more aromatic rings or on a cycloaliphatic ring. The halogenated diols useful in preparing the flame-retardant polymer additives of the invention are selected from the group consisting of at least one of the halogenated, saturated diols having the formula: ##STR1## wherein m and p are integers of 2 to 6; n and q in formulas A, C, and D are 0 or integers of 1 to 10 and integers of 1-10 in formula B; wherein in formulas A-C, X which is attached to an aromatic ring represents 1 to 4 halogen atoms; and wherein in formula D, X represents 1 to 2 halogen atoms and Z is hydrogen, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl radical, or phenyl.Polymer fibers and films such as those made from polyethylene terephthalate and cellulose ester fibers and films such as those prepared from cellulose acetate and cellulose triacetate, each containing a flame-retardant amount of the phosphorus- and halogen-containing flame-retardant polymer additives of the invention are resistant to loss of the polymeric flame-retardant additives of the invention during use.

Flame-retardant antistatic polymer additives are provided which inhibit the buildup of electrostatic charges upon the addition of such compositions to synthetic polymeric fibers, i.e., polyamide fibers, and at the same time do not contribute to the flammability characteristics of such polymeric fibers. The flame-retardant antistatic polymer compositions are useful in combinations with fibers such as polyamide, polyester, polyurea, polyurethane, polysulfonamide, polyolefin and polyacrylic fibers. The antistatic effect is obtained by the process of coating the fibers or dispersing in or on the fibers up to about 12 percent by weight of a polymer composition which is the reaction product of:(a) a polyoxyalkylene compound or polyester thereof and(b) at least one reactant selected from the group consisting of (1) a diol, (2) a polyester and (3) an aliphatic or aromatic diacid or derivative of (3), wherein at least one said reactant is halogenated.Improved flame-retardant properties can be obtained by including with the flame-retardant, antistatic polymer composition an effective flame retardant proportion of a compound containing a metal from group Vb of the periodic table. Generally about 1:4 to about 4:1 parts halogen to antimony compound is used. Such compounds are oxides of metals such as phosphorus, arsenic, antimony, or bismuth with the preferred compound being antimony trioxide.

There are disclosed mold-release compositions suitable for lubricating metal molds which are used in molding natural and synthetic rubber and other polymers. The mold release agents of the invention are oxidation-stable homopolymer and copolymer, i.e., block or heteric polyoxyalkylene lubricant compounds. The lubricants of the invention can be used alone or in mixtures with prior art polyoxyalkylene lubricant compounds. The polyoxyalkylene mold release lubricants of the invention have the formula: ##STR1## R is individually selected from alkyl groups of 1 to about 21 carbon atoms, preferably about 7 to about 21 carbon atoms, and most preferably about 12 to about 18 carbon atoms. In lubricants I and III, R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are the residue of the same or different and in lubricant II different alkylene units, all individually selected from the group consisting of the residue of ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, butylene oxide and an aromatic glycidyl ether, R.sub.3 is the residue of a difunctional phenol, R.sub.4 is hydrogen, an acyl or alkyl group and where alkyl, derived from an aliphatic monofunctional alcohol having 1 to about 21 carbon atoms, preferably about 4 to about 18 carbon atoms and most preferably about 4 to about 12 carbon atoms or where acyl derived from an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid of 2 to about 21 carbon atoms, preferably about 4 to about 18 carbon atoms and most preferably about 6 to about 12 carbon atoms, R.sub.5 is the residue of an aromatic glycidyl ether, preferably a phenyl glycidyl ether and n or m+n have a value to produce a molecular weight of about 300 to about 6000, preferably about 600 to about 5000 and most preferably about 1000 to about 4000.

There are disclosed processes for preparing a textile treated with a water-insoluble polyester wherein a linear or branched chain water-soluble sulfonate or phosphate group containing polyester is coated or impregnated onto a textile substrate in combination with a crosslinking agent and subsequent to heating to co-react the crosslinking agent with the polyester, the treated textile substrate is exposed to an aqueous solution of a polyvalent metal ion reactive with said sulfonate or phosphate groups in said polyester. Alternatively, there are disclosed processes for preparing a water-insoluble polyester on a textile substrate wherein a branched chain polyester having sulfonate or phosphate groups is coated or impregnated onto a textile substrate, the substrate is dried and subsequently exposed to an aqueous solution of a polyvalent metal ion reactive with said sulfonate or phosphate groups in said polyester. The processes disclosed herein are useful in the preparation of nonwoven fabrics and finished woven fabrics such as sized fabrics including use as a pigment binder in sizing woven fabrics.
