摘要: The present invention provides a way to use anisotropic laser gain media to make a laser that can lase in two longitudinal modes at different wavelengths with orthogonal polarizations. The two longitudinal mode (LM) laser output can be separated to generate two single LM outputs. This type of lasers can also be used to generate low noise continuous wave (CW) harmonics through intracavity harmonic generation.

摘要: This invention proposes to use a specially designed layered nonlinear optic (LNO) for intracavity harmonic generation. The LNO generates the harmonic and guides the generated harmonic beam to a different path from the fundamental beam path with total internal reflection, a phenomenon that all lights are reflected when lights in one (“internal”) optic strike sufficiently obliquely against the interface with a second (“external”) optic, in which the refractive index is lower than that in the internal optic. No coating is necessary for the harmonic inside the fundamental beam laser cavity. The generated harmonic beam does not travel through any surface inside the fundamental beam cavity, either. Hence this invention improves the reliability of intracavity harmonic generation laser especially if the harmonic is in the UV range.

摘要: Some semiconductor gain chips used for both optically pumped and electrically pumped semiconductor lasers contain transparent layers for cooling or other purposes. These layers may cause unwanted etalon effect if one or more of the transparent layers are inside the laser cavity. The present invention provides a way to remove such unwanted etalon effect, by angling the chip away from the beam axis, and dimensioning the elements of the chip, so that any etalon effect in the transparent layers is substantially avoided, while the etalon effect in the semiconductor gain structure is preserved.
