Abstract:
An improvement in a known process and apparatus for gasifying coal with water vapor and oxygen under pressure and at elevated temperature wherein coal is dropped onto a grate within a reactor supplied with gasifying agent from below, product gas being withdrawn above. In accordance with the invention an annular wall depends from the reactor top to form an annular gas space through which product gas is withdrawn. The annular space surrounds the top of the coal bed so the coal is preheated thereby. The wall is provided with apertures so that at least 20% of the product gas enters the annular space by traversing that part of the coal bed surrounded by the wall. This results in reduced product gas velocity and entrainment of coal dust.
Abstract:
A process for reducing an ore which comprises:(A) gasifying a solid carbonaceous granular fuel by contacting the same in a fixed bed with oxygen and steam at a pressure of 5 to 50 bars;(B) subjecting the gas produced from said gasification to shift conversion in order to reduce the residual carbon monoxide content to 1 to 10 percent by volume of dry gas(C) scrubbing the gaseous shift conversion gas to remove sulfur compounds and to reduce the CO.sub.2 content to no more than 3 percent by volume whereby to provide a scrubbed gas containing more than 70 percent by volume hydrogen and carbon monoxide which gas contains more than 10 percent by volume methane(D) admixing the so scrubbed gas with reduction process exhaust gas formed by reduction of ore(E) reforming the resultant mixture of gases at a pressure of 1.5-10 bars a temperature of 800.degree. to 1500.degree. C.; and(F) feeding at least a portion of such gas containing up to 3 percent by volume CO.sub.2 and 5 percent by volume methane at 700.degree.-1000.degree. to an ore-reducing plant and therein contacting said ore therewith.

An application and method for transmitting copies of data to a remote back-up site for storage, and for retrieving copies of the previously stored data from the remote back-up site. A user designates files from an originating computer for which to transfer copies to a designation computer. The originating computer transfer designated data to portable computer readable medium for storage. The portable medium is physically delivered to the destination user. The destination user uploads the stored data to the destination computer. The destination computer authenticates the uploaded data. If the data is authenticated, the destination computer stores copies of the designated files.
Abstract:
In a composite electrical circuit protection device, thermal coupling between a planar PPTC element and a planar MOV element is controlled by insertion of a thermal mass material for regulating heat transfer from the MOV element to the PPTC element, such that a PPTC resistor hot zone forms consistently away from the planar major foil electrode confronting the MOV thereby regulating heat transfer from the MOV to the PPTC resistor.
Abstract:
A method of preparing a poly(arylene ether ketone) by a Friedel-Crafts polymerization wherein a gelled reaction mixture is produced, comprising the steps of:(A) forming, in a first reactor, a reaction mixture for polymerization comprising(I) a monomer system comprising(a) (i) phosgene or an aromatic dicarboxylic acid dihalide and (ii) a substantially stoichiometric amount of a polynuclear aromatic comonomer having two active hydrogen atoms or(b) a polynuclear aromatic carboxylic acid halide having an active hydrogen atom; and(II) a Lewis acid in an amount of at least one equivalent per equivalent of carbonyl groups in the monomer system, plus an amount effective to act as a catalyst for the polymerization;(B) permitting the reaction mixture to polymerize in the first reactor until substantial partial polymerization has occurred, but before substantial gelation of the reaction mixture;(C) transferring the partially polymerized reaction mixture into a second reactor having a nozzle at one end thereof and a piston which, in its retracted position, is at the other end of the second reactor and has a stroke substantially equal to the length of the second reactor;(D) permitting polymerization to continue in the second reactor until a gelled, polymerized reaction mixture containing polymer of the desired molecular weight has been obtained;(E) discharging the gelled, polymerized reaction mixture from the second reactor through the nozzle by stroking the piston the length of the second reactor; and(F) recovering and purifying the polymer.
Abstract:
A pneumatic compression garment comprises a flexible member for placement on a limb of a human body. A bladder in the flexible member defines an inflatable chamber. The bladder has an opening through which the inflatable chamber is inflated. A port mounted on the bladder has an air inlet adapted for communication with a source of pressurized air and an air outlet in communication with the inflatable chamber via the opening in the bladder. Pressurized air is delivered from into the inflatable chamber for inflating the inflatable chamber and thereby applying a compression force to the limb when the flexible member is in place on the limb. Noise attenuating means associated with the bladder opening is provided for reducing noise from air flow through the opening into the inflatable chamber.
Abstract:
Poly(arylene ether ketones) are prepared by a Friedel-Crafts polymerization wherein a gelled reaction mixture is produced, by permitting the polymerization to proceed in a first reactor until substantial partial polymerization has occurred, but before substantial gelation of the reaction mixture; transferring the partially polymerized reaction mixture into a piston-equipped second reactor; permitting polymerization to continue in the second reactor until a gelled, polymerized reaction mixture has been obtained; and discharging the polymerized reaction mixture from the second reactor by stroking the piston.
Abstract:
The object of the invention is to provide a means of limiting the axial play of a motor shaft while dispensing with the use of an adjustable stop screw that has to be secured separately after it has been set. In particular, and apparatus is provided that can be used with automated manipulators. For this purpose it is recommended, according to the invention, that as a stopping element a single piece disk of appropriate thickness or a single piece disk stamped parallel to the motor assembly machine out of strip material, with an axially stamped depression of appropriate depth, is to be inserted rigidly in a pocket fixed in the housing. The invention is particularly well-suited for application in small motors with a shaft mounted on plain bearings.
Abstract:
A heat tracing device has one or more heating elements positioned adjacent to a heatable surface, an aerogel high temperature insulation layer adjacent to the one or more heating elements, a low temperature insulation layer adjacent to the aerogel high temperature insulation layer and a locking mechanism effective to fix the position of the low temperature insulation layer to the aerogel high temperature insulation layer.
