Odor formation during storage of (hydrocarbylthio)aromatic amines due to formation and release of odoriferous sulfur-containing species such as dihydrocarbyldisulfides, is suppressed. To accomplish this, a small amount of N,N-dihydrocarbylhydroxylamine odor-inhibitor (e.g., N,N-diethylhydroxylamine) is blended with the (hydrocarbylthio)aromatic amine. This enables products such as a mixture of 3,5-di(methylthio)-2,4-diaminotoluene and 3,5-di(methylthio)-2,6-diaminotoluene) to be stored for long periods of time with significantly reduced formation and release of odoriferous sulfur-containing species.

The coatings and articles are polyureas or polyurea-urethanes. The ingredients used to form the coatings and articles comprise at least (A) an aromatic polyisocyanate and (B) a mixture formed from components comprised of (i) at least one polyol and/or at least one polyetheramine, (ii) an aromatic primary diamine, and (iii) an aliphatic secondary diamine which has about twelve to about forty carbon atoms and in which the having amino hydrocarbyl groups are secondary or tertiary hydrocarbyl groups.

This invention provides compositions which comprise at least one aromatic secondary diamine having a Gardner color number no more than about 6. The aromatic secondary diamine either is in the form of one benzene ring having two secondary amino groups on the ring, or is in the form of two benzene rings connected by an alkylene bridge and having one secondary amino group on each ring. At least one N,N′-dihydrocarbylhydroxylamine is optionally present in the composition. Processes for producing such compositions are also provided.

This invention provides aromatic diimines which have imino hydrocarbylidene groups with at least two carbon atoms, and aromatic secondary diamines which have amino hydrocarbyl groups with at least two carbon atoms. Both the aromatic diimines and the aromatic secondary diamines either are in the form of one phenyl ring, or are in the form of two phenyl rings connected by an alkylene bridge; each position ortho to an imino group or an amino group bears a hydrocarbyl group. When in the form of one phenyl ring, there are two imino groups on the ring or two amino groups on the ring; the imino groups or amino groups are meta or para relative to each other. When in the form of two phenyl rings connected by an alkylene bridge, there is either one imino group or one amino group on each phenyl ring. Also provided are processes for forming diimines and secondary diamines.

Impure 2,6-diisopropylphenol (DIP) is purified by use of a distillation process in which a single distillation column is used. The process comprises: (a) subjecting the impure DIP to a first continuous distillation in the column in an inert environment to distill off lower boiling components and produce first column bottoms enriched in DIP; (b) collecting, cooling and storing the first column bottoms while continuously maintaining them in an inert environment; (c) discontinuing the first continuous distillation; (d) subjecting the first column bottoms to a second continuous distillation in an inert environment in the same column to produce a second overhead distillate composed of purified DIP. The process avoids the formation in the distilling mixtures of dose boiling impurities due to seepage of air through standard pipe flanges and fittings and consequent oxidation reactions which occur under the conditions needed for batch distillations conducted in typical industrial distillation facilities. These impurities include 2,6-diisopropylbenzoquinone, 2-isopropyl-6-isopropenylphenol, 2,6-diisopropenylphenol and 2,2-dimethyl-4-isopropyl-1,3-benzodioxole. The capital investment needed for a conventional continuous distillation facility is also avoided.
