    Abstract: A spark plug has a housing, a pair of center and ground electrodes configured to define a spark gap therebetween, a guide member and an oblique surface. The ground electrode has a standing portion that stands distalward from a distal end of the housing. The guide member is configured to guide the flow of an air-fuel mixture in a combustion chamber of an engine to the spark gap. The guide member protrudes distalward from the distal end of the housing at a different circumferential position from the ground electrode. The oblique surface is formed at the distal end of the housing so as to be circumferentially positioned between the guide member and the standing portion of the ground electrode. The oblique surface is oblique to the axial direction of the spark plug so that the radial distance between the oblique surface and the center electrode decreases in the distalward direction.

    Abstract: A spark plug for an internal combustion engine includes a tubular housing, a tubular insulator, a center electrode, a ground electrode and a guide member. The guide member is configured to guide the flow of an air-fuel mixture in a combustion chamber of the engine to a spark gap formed between the center electrode and the ground electrode. Moreover, in the spark plug, the following dimensional relationships are satisfied: b≧−67.8×(a/D)+27.4; b≦−123.7×(a/D)+64.5; −0.4≦(a/D)≦0.4; and 0°≦b≦90°. Further, with an oblique angle θ being in the range of 0 to 30°, the following dimensional relationship is also satisfied: 0.8≦r/R≦1. Consequently, the spark plug can secure, with a simple configuration, a stable ignition capability regardless of the mounting posture of the spark plug to the engine.

    Abstract: A center electrode is held in insulating glass, in which a tip end portion of the center electrode protrudes. A ground electrode has a connection part connected to a housing. The ground electrode forms a spark discharge gap between the center electrode and the ground electrode. The ground electrode has a ground base material that includes the connection part and a ground protrusion part that protrudes from the ground base material toward the center electrode and forms the spark discharge gap between the center electrode and the ground electrode. An angle between a ground discharge surface of the ground protrusion part and a side surface of the ground protrusion part is a right angle or an acute angle. At least a portion of the side surface of the ground protrusion part and at least a portion of a side surface of the ground base material are flush with each other.

    Abstract: In an ignition coil for an internal combustion engine, a spark plug is incorporated which has an insulator including an insulator head that has no corrugation. The ignition coil has a coil body part generating high voltage and a joint part, which holds therein a conducting member electrically connecting the coil body part and a spark plug. The joint part has a plug cap into which the insulator head of the spark plug is inserted and which is formed of an elastic member having a cylindrical shape. The plug cap has a close-contact part whose inner peripheral surface is closely brought into contact with an outer peripheral surface of the insulator. The close-contact part has a tip end-side close-contact part positioned at a tip end side with respect to a middle position in an axial direction, and a base end-side close-contact part positioned at a base end side with respect to the middle position. At least part of the base end-side close-contact part is provided with a strong strained force part that has strained force for fastening the insulator head, the strained force being stronger than strained force of all portions of the tip end-side close-contact part.

    Abstract: A spark plug for an internal combustion engine includes a cylindrical metal shell, a center electrode, and a ground electrode. The center electrode has an end portion which protrudes outside an end of the metal shell. The ground electrode is joined at an end thereof to the metal shell and has an inner surface facing the end portion of the center electrode. The ground electrode has a maximum width W meeting a relation of 1.3≤W≤2.0. A distance d between the center of an end surface of the center electrode and the inner surface of the ground electrode on a plane extending through the center of the center electrode perpendicular to an axis of the spark plug is selected to meet a relation of W+0.525≤d≤1.07W+0.66. This ensures the stability of ignitability of the spark plug.

    Abstract: An ignition system is provided, in which a Zener diode is connected in parallel with a spark plug, to suppress torque variation from becoming large in an engine when deterioration of the spark plug is advanced. Specifically, the ignition system includes a secondary coil having an end connected to a center electrode of the spark plug via a connecting path. The connecting path is connected to a constant-voltage path having a grounded end and including the Zener diode. The time from when an ignition signal is switched off until when ignition timing occurs is measured for a plurality of times. The difference between a maximum value and a minimum value among the plurality of measurements is defined to be a variation range. A breakdown voltage of the Zener diode is adjusted based on requirements such as for rendering the variation range to be a predetermined time or smaller.

The spark plug has a structure which satisfies a relationship of t2/t1≤0.85, s1≤0.5, and s1≥1.05−t2/t1. A leg part of the insulator has a first end and a second end in an axial direction thereof. The second end is located opposite to the first end in the axial direction. In the relationship, t1 represents a first radial thickness of the first end in a radial direction of the leg part, t2 represents a center radial thickness in the radial direction at a middle position of the leg part, and s1 represents a first gap width in the radial direction of the housing between the projection part of the housing and the first end of the leg part.
