Low cost water based binder system was developed for shaping ferrous, nonferrous metals and/or ceramics parts by injection molding processes. The process comprises the steps of preparing a mixture containing a gel-forming powder comprising carrageenan, metal and/or ceramic powders, de-ionized water and a gel-strengthening additive. The mixture is injection molded to produce self-supporting articles. The present invention provides a direct compounding and molding of metal and/or ceramic feedstock. Additionally, a coating composition comprising gelatine, water and a metal and/or ceramic powder is used to form coating layers on selected materials.

A composite molding compound comprising a combination of metal and ceramic powders is disclosed. The powders are combined with a binder, a liquid carrier and other processing additives in a manner to provide uniform distribution of two phases in a material format that facilitates the molding of complex parts at relatively low pressures and temperatures using conventional injection molding machines. The products formed from these molding compounds may be designed with tailored physical and mechanical properties such as thermal conductivity, thermal expansion coefficient, density, elastic modulus and wear properties.

A composition for forming molded metal containing articles having improved stability. More particularly, a corrosion resistant composition for forming injection molded articles having a sodium silicate corrosion inhibiting additive. The corrosion inhibitor prevents metal oxidation when a metal containing powder is mixed with a water based binder, providing stability to the article and preventing generation of hydrogen gas. This significantly enhances the shelf life of the moldable composition prior to molding.
