Abstract: Methods and arrangements to methods and arrangements to attenuate electrostatic discharges of a cable are disclosed. Embodiments may include connectors with discharge elements integrated into the connectors to interconnect conductors of a cable to attenuate or discharge an electrostatic charge built up on the conductors. In some embodiments, the conductors are momentarily connected to ground as the connector couples with another connector to interconnect a cable with, e.g., a computer. In further embodiments, the discharge elements interconnect the conductors of a cable to redistribute an electrostatic charge and thereby minimize the impact of a discharge when the cable couples with an electronic system such as a computer. Another embodiment comprises a male connector with discharge elements, which ground conductors of the cable as the cable is being inserted into the connector. The discharge elements are pushed out of the way of the conductors as the conductors couple with the connector.

Abstract: A method, apparatus, and computer program product are disclosed for improving video-on-demand (VOD) content delivery in regional networks. A VOD server is coupled to a global VOD network. The global VOD network is coupled to multiple different regional VOD networks. Multiple different clients are coupled to each one of the regional VOD networks. The server receives a request from a first client in a first one of the regional VOD networks to receive a particular video. The first client is coupled to the first one of the regional VOD networks. The server determines whether a second client that is also coupled to the first one of the regional VOD networks has a first block of the particular video. If the second client does have the first block of the video, the server transmits an instruction to the second client to transmit the particular video to the first client. This instruction includes information needed by the second client in order to permit the second client to transmit the video from the second client to the first client. The instruction from the server does not include any video content. The server then refrains from transmitting the particular video to the first client in response to the request from the first client for the particular video.

Abstract: Systems and arrangements for improving audits such as technical audits in semiconductor fabrication facilities and especially controlled environments are contemplated. Embodiments include a processing device with an interactive interface designed to request information about one or more quality issues. Further embodiments focus requests to questions that are relevant to the particular piece of equipment, process, maintenance procedure, etc. . . . , in light of answers received from the auditor for prior questions. Still further embodiments provide some or all of the potential answers to the questions so an auditor may simply select the correct answer based upon observations and/or interaction with the staff at the fabrication facility. Several embodiments are adapted to operate on small computers such as Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) that are allowed entry into many or all controlled environments such as clean rooms.

Abstract: RFID tags to provide a relatively low power and power conserving wireless communication system to dynamically and automatically transfer all preselected data developed in designated digital devices to a centralized data processing system. Inclusion, in the target mobile wireless devices from which data is to be transferred, of an RFID tag, preferably passive, to minimize power consumption that is conventionally recognizable by a short range RF transceiver in the computer system to which data is to be transferred. Thus, each mobile wireless device being tracked includes a short range RFID tag, a short range RF transceiver and storage means for the digital data developed by the device that is to be transferred. The data processing system to which the transfer is to be made should include a short range RF transceiver for identifying all RFID tags within this short range boundary; and means, responsive to the system RF transceiver identifying the RFID tag in the mobile wireless device within said short range boundary, for transmitting a signal to said mobile device to trigger the mobile device transceiver to transmit stored digital data to the data processing system.

Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided for locating and retrieving specified data content in a database, wherein data in the database is derived from recorded speech. While the data usefully comprises compressed digital audio or video data files associated with the recorded speech, retrieval of the specified content requires decompression of only a portion of the compressed data. In one useful embodiment comprising a method for locating specified content of the above type, a compressed audio file comprising recorded speech is converted into a corresponding text file, wherein the text file is divided into multiple text file segments, each having a unique identifier. A searchable index is constructed from the text file, wherein the index comprises a number of index elements, each index element associated with particular information located in one or more of the text file segments. One or more specified search arguments are used to search respective elements of the searchable index, in order to detect one or more text segments, wherein each detected segment contains at least some of the specified content. The identifiers of respective detected segments are then used to locate the specified content in the audio file. Only portions of the audio file that contain specified content require decompression, in order to retrieve the content.

Abstract: A handheld palm-type device senses that it is being held in a human hand, but not any specific human hand. It can sense whether it is held in any human hand. A handheld palm-type device with keys for data entry and apparatus for preventing inadvertent striking of the keys when the palm-type device is not handheld that comprises the combination of an implementation on the device for sensing a bi-stable physical condition having an on state when the device is handheld and an off state when not handheld and apparatus responsive to the sensing means for locking the data entry keys when the off state is sensed. The device has a housing with a surface for engaging the palm of a user's hand so that the sensor means are at the surface that interfaces with the palm of the hand. The bi-stable electrical condition sensed may be temperature, electrical capacitance or resistance at the palm-device interface.
