Esters of glyoxylic acids are formed by the oxidation of an organoglycolate ester using a hypohalide oxidizing agent, preferably under phase transfer conditions using a phase transfer catalyst. An example of a suitable oxidizing agent is sodium hypohalite, and a preferred starting material is methyl mandelate.

Polymeric alkoxysilanes which comprise a polymer network of the average formula ##STR1## wherein each R is an independently selected hydrocarbon or hydrocarbon ether radical, each .[.R'.]..Iadd.R.sup.1 .Iaddend. is an independently selected hydrocarbon radical, all of said radicals being free of aliphatic unsaturation, a has a value from 1 to 3; and b has a value from 0.0001 to 1.0. These polymers are made by reacting an alkoxysilane of the formula ##EQU1## with water and with an organosulfonic acid of the formula R.sup.1 SO.sub.3 H. These polymers are useful in zinc-rich paints and in binders for investment castings.

A stable suspension of ethylpolysilicate nanoparticles having a size of between about 5 nm and 120 nm are in water and stabilized with between about 0.05 and 5 weight percent tetraalkylammonium hydroxide. The particles are between about 95% and 99.5% hydrolyzed and have superior removal rates when used in chemical mechanical polishing. A process for making ethylpolysilicate nanoparticles includes the step of adding reverse osmosis water and 25% tetramethylammonium hydroxide and ammonium hydroxide to a reactor, agitating the mixture and heating the mixture to about 80° C. Tetraethylalkoxy silane is added to the mixture and the mixture stirred and hydrolyzed. Ethanol is then removed. The mixture was then subjected to a vacuum to remove additional distillate. The material left in the reactor was then transferred to a plastic drum.

An improved aerogel and a process for production of the same. The improved aerogel which has a significantly reduced dust (e.g., aerogel fines) and static charge, as compared with conventional aerogel products. The aerogel also has a “sticky” or “tacky” nature which can be used to attract any available dust, fines and/or particulate matter and also restrict flowability of aerogel granules, for example, out of a breached container and thereby minimize loss of the aerogel product through any breached opening.
