APPARATUS FOR THE COMBUSTION OF TITANIUM TETRACHLORIDE WITH OXYGEN TO TITANIUM DIOXIDE INTO A REACTION CHAMBER, THE APPARATUS COMPRISES A TUBULAR CYLINDRICAL VORTEX CHAMBER WITH AN OUTLET AND EQUIPPED WITH A FLARE TOWARDS THE REACTION CHAMBER; A FEEDING DEVICE FOR THE VORTEX CHAMBER CONSISTING OF THREE DUCTS COAXIAL ONE WITH EACH OTHER AND WITH THE VORTEX CHAMBER, THE INNER ONE OF SAID DUCTS FEEDING ONE OF TWO AUXILIARY REACTANTS HAS NO SWIRL DEVICES, THE MIDDLE ONE, FEEDING A SECOND AUXILIARY REACTANT IS EQUIPPED WITH A SWIRL DEVICE. THE COAXIAL FLARE ENDING IN THE REACTION CHAMBER DIVERGES IN ITS LAST PART FROM THE TUBULAR BODY OF AN ANGLE COMPRISED BETWEEN 10* AND 45*. THE RATIO OF THE LENGTH OF THE CONICAL FLARE VERSUS THE DIAMETER OF THE TUBULAR BODY IS BETWEEN 0.15 AND 1. THE RATIO BETWEEN THE LENGTH OF THE VORTEX CHAMBER AND THE DIAMETER OF SAID CHAMBER IS BETWEEN 0 AND 3. THE RATIO OF THE LENGTH OF THE PORTION OF THE DUCT WHERE THE MIXING OF THE AUXILIARY REACTING SUBSTANCES OCCURS, AND THE DIAMETER OF THE DUCT IS BETWEEN 2 AND 10.
Abstract:
Method for producing pigment quality titanium dioxide of controlled particle size by reacting gaseous titanium tetrachloride with an oxygen-containing gas in a reactor having a cylindrical duct, a coaxial cylindrical reaction chamber of diameter greater than the diameter of the duct and spaced below the duct and a frusto-conical divergent duct connecting the cylindrical duct to the reaction chamber, wherein the oxygencontaining gas is introduced through the cylindrical duct and the titanium tetrachloride is introduced into the frusto-conical section of the reactor at a variably selectable location therein.

DESCRIBED ARE A PROCESS AND APPARATUS FOR THE COMBUSTION FO TITANIUM TETRACHLORIDE WITH OXYGEN TO TITANIUM DIOXIDE. THE PROCESS IS CHARACTERIZED BY: (A) TWO GAS STREAMS ARE FED INTO THE REACTION ZONE: (1) A FIRST STREAM FORMED BY A MIXTURE OF TITANIUM TETRACHLORIDE, OXYGTEN AND EVENTUALLY NUCLEANT AND RUTILIZING SUBSTANCES; (2) A SECOND STREAM, CONCENTRICALLY ENVELOPED BY THE FIRST ONE AND CONTAINING AN AUXILIARY FUEL AND OXYGEN, TOTALLY OR PARTIALLY PREMIXED; (B) TO BOTH STREAMS, OR ONLY TO THE INNER ONE, A SWIRLFLOW IS IMPRESSED WITH SUCH AN INTENSITY THAT THEY LEAVE THE BURNER TO REACH THE REACTION ZONE AS AN ANNULAR JET OR A GASEOUS FILM WHICH ENCLOSES A CENTRAL RECIRCULATION COMPLETELY IMMERSED IN THE RESULTING STREAM LEAVING THE BURNER.
