    Abstract: A control system for a horizontal type carrier, or ''''chain'''', printer wherein a recirculating shift register memory is employed to store the code representations of characters to be printed on the print line. A tracking or address counter is advanced in synchronism with the movement of data through the shift register and serves to identify each character stored therein with the particular print position in which it is to be printed. Generation of print command signals is accomplished by comparing, in sequence, each character stored in the memory with the output of a character generation counter which is advanced in synchronism with the movement of the type carrier to identify the order in which the types on the carrier move past the print positions. Actuation of the comparator and advancement of the character generation counter are controlled directly by the output of the tracking counter. Beginning-of-font sync pulses are generated by gating a primary index signal derived directly from the type carrier with a secondary index signal derived from a rotating code disc. A plurality of index marks are provided on the code disc in a manner to enable generation of properly timed beginning-of-font signals for any of a variety of different font length type carriers interchangeably employable in the printer.

    Abstract: A telecommunications line-printer employs a segmented line print control and data buffering system wherein the serially received data and format control characters are temporarily stored in data groups corresponding to segments of a print line. Each group is scanned during printout operations until all data in the group have been printed. A switching matrix connects hammer driver circuits only to hammers in the line segment being printed, thus conserving hardware by time-sharing the drivers. Each data group has a control character defining format control operations, which operations are executed before printing of the group begins. In ordinary circumstances, each format control character occurring at the input opens a new data group to receive the next data characters, regardless of whether the previous group was completely filled. However, in ''''short line'''' situations memory is conserved by not closing the group until it is full and the rate of extraction of data from the memory is increased by temporarily suspending the performance of format operations. This preserves real time printing while insuring against loss of input data. In short-line situations, received format control characters are ignored by the format control means and instead trigger the printing of a special character indicating that a format operation was deleted.

    Abstract: A printer in which selectively activated hammers drive selected print slugs against a document by striking interposers which are maintained in contact and associated with the selected slugs and which transmit the force of the hammers to the slugs. Each slug is associated with a particular interposer and both are mounted in a continuous chain which moves across the document at the print line and is located on the same side of the document as are the hammers. The interposers are resiliently mounted in the chain and the slugs are biased away from the document and maintained in contact with the interposers. Preferably, each slug is partially located in an open-ended bore within its associated interposer and has a flanged end on which a type character is located projecting out of the bore. The slug''s flange is maintained in contact with the open end of the interposer and the centroids of the slug and interposer are aligned perpendicular to the document and along the center of the bore. Thus, an impact force on the interposer is transmitted to the flange of the slug to drive the slug toward, and perpendicular to the document.

    Abstract: A print hammer firing circuit incorporating secondary storage includes a Schmitt trigger, two logical AND circuits and a logical OR circuit. One of the AND circuits and the OR circuit are mutually interconnected input-to-output to provide the storage function and to drive the Schmitt trigger. The second AND circuit is connected to gate the trigger output under control of the storage circuit. An integrating network at the trigger input causes the gated output, which drives the hammer coil, to define an accurate hammer actuation time interval.
