Abstract: Disclosed herein are embodiments of a method and system for converting ethanol to para-xylene. The method also provides a pathway to produce terephthalic acid from biomass-based feedstocks. In some embodiments, the disclosed method produces p-xylene with high selectivity over other aromatics typically produced in the conversion of ethanol to xylenes, such as m-xylene, ethyl benzene, benzene, toluene, and the like. And, in some embodiments, the method facilitates the ability to use ortho/para mixtures of methylbenzyaldehyde for preparing ortho/para xylene product mixtures that are amendable to fractionation to separate the para- and ortho-xylene products thereby providing a pure feedstock of para-xylene that can be used to form terephthalic anhydride and a pure feedstock of ortho-xylene that can be used for other purposes, such as phthalic anhydride.

Abstract: Integrated process for providing multiple raw materials to a downstream operation to generate an article of manufacture. Pyrolysis, torrefaction, reforming, partial oxidation, and/or gasification is integrated with gas fermentation. Integrated process converts carbon sources that would otherwise be vented to the atmosphere or discarded as waste to a fermentation product and one or more byproducts, which in turn are provided to a downstream operation to generate an article of manufacture. In certain aspects, the fermentation product may be ethanol, isoprene, butane diol, ethylene. In certain aspects, the byproduct may be metal, metal oxide, char, silica, and or steel. The downstream operation to generate an article of manufacture may be an operation to generate plastic products, rubber products, textiles, clothes, and the like.

Abstract: The disclosure provides for the integration of a CO-consuming process, such as a gas fermentation process, with a CO2 to CO conversion system. The disclosure is capable of utilizing a CO2-comprising gaseous substrate generated by an industrial process and provides for one or more removal modules to remove at least one constituent from a CO2-comprising gaseous substrate prior to passage of the gaseous substrate to a CO2 to CO conversion system. The disclosure may further comprise one or more pressure modules, one or more CO2 concentration modules, one or more O2 separation modules, and/or a water electrolysis module. Carbon conversion efficiency is increased by recycling CO2 produced by a CO-consuming process to the CO2 to CO conversion process.

Abstract: A process and system for producing a fermentable gas stream from a gas source that contains one or more impurity which may be harmful to the fermentation process is provided. To produce the fermentable gas stream, the gas stream is passed through a specifically ordered series of removal beds. The removal beds remove and/or convert various impurities found in the gas stream which may have harmful effects on downstream removal beds and/or inhibitory effects on downstream gas fermenting microorganisms. At least a portion of the fermentable gas stream may be capable of being passed to a bioreactor, which contains gas fermenting microorganisms.

In particular, the disclosure provides process and a system for utilizing electrolysis products, for example H2 and/or O2 in a CO2 to CO conversion unit to improve the process efficiency of at least one of the fermentation processes or the C1-generating industrial process. More particularly, the disclosure provides a process in which H2 generated by electrolysis is passed to a CO2 to CO conversion unit to improve the substrate efficiency for a fermentation process, and the O2 generated by electrolysis process is used to improve the composition of the C1-containing tail gas generated by the C1-generating industrial process.

A carbon black production process is integrated with a gas fermentation process, and a feedstock preparation process is integrated with gas fermentation process. Both carbon black and a gas fermentation product are provided to a downstream operation. Secondary products from the carbon black process may be used in the gas fermentation process. Byproducts from the feedstock preparation process may be provided to the downstream operation or may be passed to the carbon black process. In certain aspects, the fermentation product may be ethanol, isoprene, butane diol, and/or ethylene. In certain aspects, the byproduct may be metal, metal oxide, char, silica, and/or steel. In certain aspects, the secondary product may be hydrogen and/or carbon dioxide. The downstream operation may be to generate plastic products, rubber products, tires, textiles, clothes, and the like.
