The antenna includes one or more active patch antenna elements that collectively define four corners, wherein the active patch antenna element(s) are positioned on a first surface of the substrate. The antenna includes four parasitic patch elements coplanar to the active patch antenna element(s) and adjacent to each respective corner of the active patch antenna element(s). The antenna includes a switching circuit configured to dynamically couple, to the ground plane, the first parasitic patch element, the second parasitic patch element, the third parasitic patch element, and/or the fourth parasitic patch element.

In one example implementation, the antenna system may include a modal antenna that is operable in a plurality of different modes, and each mode may be associated with a different radiation pattern. The antenna system may include a tuning circuit configured to operate the modal antenna in the plurality of different modes. A transmission line may be coupled to the tuning circuit. The antenna system may further include one or more control devices. The control devices may be configured to modulate a control signal onto a radio frequency (RF) signal to generate a modulated signal for communication over the transmission line to the tuning circuit. The control devices may be further configured to generate an acknowledgement (ACK) signal based at least in part on the control signal.
