    摘要: A picker for a computer information storage library. The computer information storage library includes at least one computer information drive, storage locations for data cartridges, a picker and a transport mechanism. The picker includes a sleeve for holding a cartridge and a moveable thumb. The transport mechanism provides displacement in two orthogonal dimensions for the picker. The moveable thumb provides displacement in a third dimension orthogonal to the movement of the transport mechanism. Data cartridges include two openings in a bottom surface. The thumb includes fixed fingers with bent tips that engage the openings in the bottom surface of the data cartridges. Data cartridges are removed from a drive or storage by hooking the tips of the fingers into the data cartridge openings, and then moving the thumb relative to the sleeve to pull the cartridge into the sleeve. The picker also includes a rigid thumb for pushing a data cartridge out of the sleeve and into a drive or into a storage location. In addition, data cartridge drives of interest have a cartridge alignment and spindle engagement mechanism that is activated mechanically by a handle on the front of the drive. The picker also includes a handle manipulation spring that is used to raise and lower the handle on the drive.

    摘要: Cylinder-to-cylinder attachment method and construction featuring nonutilization of mechanical fasteners or bonding, especially advantageous for attachment of cylinders which are composite or to be subjected to hydrostatic pressure. A fastening ring is interpositionally and rotatively engaged and aligned with a toothed axial end of each cylinder whereby the inwardly radial teeth for each cylinder appropriately mesh with the outer grooved circumferential surface of the fastening ring. The resultant joint is easily detachable and less susceptible than conventional joints to damage, breakage, degradation, stress concentrations and fluid infiltration.

    摘要: A media detection system includes a light source mounted within a cartridge receiving chamber defined by a cartridge engaging assembly. A cartridge referencing member has an arm portion mounted to the cartridge engaging assembly and a head portion located within the cartridge receiving chamber at a position adjacent the light source. The cartridge referencing member is deflected by a data cartridge within the cartridge receiving chamber so that when no data cartridge is located within the cartridge receiving member, the cartridge referencing member is not deflected and the cartridge referencing member blocks light from the light source. When a data cartridge is located within the cartridge receiving member, the cartridge referencing member blocks less light from the light source. A detector assembly mounted within the cartridge receiving chamber detects whether light from the light source is blocked or not blocked.

    摘要: A picker for data cartridges in a computer information storage library. The picker includes a sleeve for transporting data cartridges, a thumb that can move in one dimension relative to the sleeve, and a single pivoting finger on the thumb. The single finger has an inboard pivot point which results in a self locking action (pulling makes the finger grip tighter). The finger has an armed state for gripping and a splayed state for release. Switching between states is passive, depending only on one dimensional motion of the thumb relative to the sleeve. The finger has a post that travels in tracks in the sleeve. Switching tracks switches finger states. A spring loaded gate in the tracks enables track switching. Potential cartridge wear and binding problems during extraction are eliminated by providing sleeve guides that limit cartridge rotation, by providing a concave guide surface in storage locations, and by proper selection of materials. A corresponding drive has a handle that must be manipulated. The picker includes thumb details for manipulating the drive handle.
