The linear drive system can be coupled and uncoupled free from play to and from the rotary table by means of a clamping system, with the linear drive system being connected to the support member and to the clamping system with two play-free joints. A rotary measuring system is mounted at the axis of table rotation to ascertain the table's current angle of rotation. Once the rotary table has been moved to the starting position, the first drive system is switched off and the second drive system is rigidly connected to the rotary table by the clamping system, and thereafter the table is moved free from play by the spindle drive powered by a servomotor under CNC control.

A CNC machine for producing spiral-toothed bevel gears is described, which has a first carriage supporting a tool spindle and is displaceable in height, and whose guide is disposed on a lateral surface of a machine housing, which is horizontally guided in a straight coordinate axis on a machine base. The tool spindle axis is parallel with the lateral surface and with the coordinate axis. Furthermore, the machine has a workpiece spindle support having a second carriage and a pivoting device with a vertical axis and is also horizontally guided on the machine base. The parallel arrangement of the tool spindle axis results in a new machine concept with a compact structure and optimal chip flow. Therefore the machine is particularly suited for heavy-duty dry milling. Since the tool spindle is not located above the area of the machine having a horizontal guide, it is possible to arrange a chip collector underneath the tool spindle, which can be reached by the chips essentially under the force of gravity.

A multi-functional tool holder (24) is provided, which may be displaced relative to the workpiece blank (K1) held in the turning machine (22) and comprises a tool base (25) mounted to rotate about an axis (B2). The tool base (25) is provided for fixing one or more tools. A tool housing (26) with milling head (27) is provided, the tool housing (26) being displaceable relative to the workpiece blank (K1) held in the turning machine (22) and the milling head (27) is mounted to rotate about a milling head axis (B3). A controller is provided for control of the movement processes, to subject the workpiece blank (K1) firstly to a turning process with a tool fixed to the tool base (25) and then a toothing machining with the milling head (27).
