    Abstract: A machine direction (MD) position profile measurement of a moving sheet records the MD position of each of the cross direction (CD) measurements. A sheet monitoring system includes means for measuring the MD speed of the sheet of material; means for associating measured MD speed with time to generate time-associated MD speeds; means for recording the time-associated MD speeds; a first scanning sensor for measuring a first characteristic of the sheet material wherein the first scanning sensor is located at a first position along the MD and the first scanner sensor traverses back and forth along a CD; and means for associating first characteristic measurements with time to generate time-associated first characteristic measurements. Single and multiple scanning sensors can be employed. For multiple scanner systems where the scanners are synchronized, the technique enables recreation of the real zig-zag measurement path and same spot measurements.

    Abstract: A measurement apparatus includes an x-ray sensor including an x-ray source having a high voltage power supply for emitting an x-ray spectrum and an x-ray detector for providing a measured x-ray signal value responsive to the x-rays received after transmission through a coated substrate including a sheet material having a coating material thereon. A second sensor is a beta gauge or infrared sensor for providing a second sensor signal that includes data for determining a total weight per unit area of the coated substrate or of the sheet material A computing device receives the measured x-ray signal value and the second sensor signal configured to implement an x-ray based calculation that utilizes absorption coefficients for the coating material and sheet material, the measured x-ray signal value, the x-ray spectrum, and the weight measure as a calculation constraint, for computing at least the weight per unit area of the coating material.

    Abstract: System for control and optimization of a coated secondary battery electrode drying process includes a closed-loop process control module that is configured to process manufacturing data derived from a sheet production apparatus for coating a metal sheet with electrode material. The electrode production system includes: a continuous source of a sheet of metal substrate; a coater that is configured to apply electrode material to form a coated moving sheet; an oven that equipped with a heat source to remove solvent from the coat to form a dried coated moving sheet; means for determining the residual solvent content in the dried coated moving sheet and generating representative signals; and controller means for controlling the intensity of the heat source in response to the signals to maintain the residual solvent content at a desired level.

    Abstract: Fiducial markers (reference marks and associated tracing codes) are applied to sheet materials such as electrodes, paper, plastics, and fabrics and serve as reference points along the machine direction. As the sheet advances, tracing codes are recorded to create a database of tracing codes and as a physical property of the sheet of material is measured a measurement profile is recorded wherein measurements of the physical property are synchronized with the tracing codes from the database so that different portions of the measurement profile are associated with one or more accompanying tracing codes. Customers can match measurements made during production to finished products such as electrochemical batteries so that defects found at a later stage of production can be traced to the source measurements to achieved improved quality assurance. The reference marks facilitate alignment among measurements made by different scanners especially on discontinuous batch processes that require resetting and rethreading.

    Abstract: Calender measurement and control system, for fabricating electrode sheets for lithium-ion batteries to an apparatus, includes: dual rotating rolls through which the sheet travels, heating elements (inductive coils) positioned along the length of one or both of rotating rolls, and means for controlling the intensity of the heating in a rotating roll(s) along the length of the rotating roll(s) where the heating is applied. The diameter of the heated rotating roll expands in response to the heat thereby regulating the thickness of the electrode. Controller input includes operating point data comprising electrode material composition, electrode coating weight, maximum electrode coat density, initial electrode coat thickness, temperature of one or both of the rotating rollers incorporating a heating element, and line load. The controller can be tuned whereby the process gain from line load to final thickness is automatically calculated at a specified operating point defined by the operating point data.

    Abstract: A compact C-shaped scanner employs at least two sensors and has a mechanism to standardize or calibrate the sensors. The upper and lower elongated beams of the C-frame include a mid-beam sensor and an outer beam sensor. The scanner can monitor the entire width of a continuous sheet by advancing the scanner back and forth along a scanning distance that is only about half that of the sheet width thereby minimizing the required offsheet distance by an amount approaching half the width of the sheet being monitored. Standardization tiles consisting of references materials that are positioned laterally from the edges of the moving sheet allow for calibration of the sensors which operate either in the transmissive or reflective mode. Selected sheet properties or characteristics of the sheet material can be measured. The two sensors can operate in the transmissive or four sensors can operate in the reflective mode.
